Entries can be left with any committee member or can be brought to the village hall from 6.30pm to 7pm, prior to the meeting commencing. Primary School: The governors of Horton-in-Ribblesdale Primary School exhibition foundation are prepared to consider applications for grants towards full-time continuous courses of advance study. Applicants must currently be resident in Horton-in-Ribblesdale and to have lived there and attended a local school for not less than two years. Coniston Cold Young Farmers: Coniston Cold Young Farmers met at Flasby near Gargrave for a farm walk. Members were given an extensive and interesting tour of the organic dairy unit and dairy herd as well as at tour of the higher land. Joe Hudson thanked farm managers Daniel Hayes and Ian McGeogh for interesting tour. Next week’s meeting will be a cycle ride round Malham Tarn.

Austwick Derek and Celia Coultherd 015242 51215 Austwick WI: Members recently enjoyed a gentle evening’s walk around the Ingleton area led by Angela Rogers and Lizz Cook. Parish Council: At the August meeting of Ingleton Parish Council, a member of the public raised concerns about the poor state of the railings by Jenkins Beck. It was agreed that the Clerk should write to Highways to request action. The Ingleton Ladies’ netball team had requested a donation and it was agreed to give them £150 towards the cost of new netball posts. After discussion, councillors agreed not to support a local resident’s proposal for a disabled parking bay outside the pharmacy. They also agreed that the clerk should write a letter of objection to the removal of the BT kiosk from the square. A serious pothole on the pavement on Main Street was reported and the clerk will pass this on. Coun McGonnigal offered to organise a maintenance group for the Pump Track and this was accepted with appreciation from the other members. Coun Lis reported on a successful gala. Coun Weaire reported on the recent progress of the Village Action team. A topographic survey was being conducted of the park. Members took note that from April 2017 the blue bins will include paper waste.

Grassington Sheila Denby, 01756 752605 Horticultural Society: Grassington and District Horticultural Society will be staging their Annual Autumn Show on Saturday August 20 in Grassington Town Hall. The display will be judged in the morning and the event will be open to view by the general public during the afternoon.

Hospice Coffee: Martin House Children’s Hospice will be fundraising at a coffee morning on Saturday in Church House, Grassington, 9am-noon. Hub Market: The annual Street Market in aid of Grassington Hub and Library will be on Saturday, August 27, on Grassington’s cobbled square. Theatre Support: On behalf of the Trustees of Grassington Town Hall and Devonshire Institute, their Chairman, Andrew Wilson is making an appeal for financial support to re-seat The Octagon Theatre. New, individual, padded red seats are to replace the hard bench seating in this lovely building. Already half are paid for and Andrew points out that each seat costs £150, which could attract gift aid from the government per seat of £25.

Upper Wharfedale Sheila Denby, 01756 752605 Churchyard Upkeep: Throughout the year The Hubberholme St Michael’s and All Angels churchyard has been very well maintained by Gordon Kelvington. The Churchyard Maintenance Fund did not cover the basic upkeep. In the extended churchyard, sheep performed the main tasks, thanks to the co-operation of Mark Falshaw and thanks have been extended to him for his willingness to help.

School Room: The room at Buckden continues to be used by the community and for church meetings and fundraising events. A regular, fortnightly Contemplative Service has been introduced on Thursdays at noon in this church building.

Seat Move: The ‘Sheep Seat’ which was made for Grassington in Bloom from a felled tree has been moved from the Elbolton Corner to a more central position opposite the Colvend Car Park as it was felt the it made more of a point to village visitors about the nature and heritage of our area.

Bloom Tea: Grassington in Bloom raised £260 at the afternoon tea event in Church House during Grassington Festival. The group is self-funding and will help with planting costs for the coming year. Chairman Diane Mackridge described the welcome support received from many local people who give their time in other ways such as maintenance work, baking, helping out at fundraising events.

Stroke Support: A group to support stroke victims and their families may be set up in Silsden, if a sufficient need can be proved. The initiative comes from Later Life Cobbydale, a network of individuals and local organisations which has come together with the aim of boosting services for older people in the district and which currently meets every six weeks at the town hall. Following an approach from a family coping with the effects and isolation of a stroke diagnosis, Later Life Cobbydale wants to hear from others in Silsden who may be interested in attending a group which would offer social activities as well as information, encouragement and mutual support. Coffee Morning: This will start at 10am in the village Hall on Saturday 13 August with all contributions being donated to Village Hall funds. As well as home made cakes, toasted teacakes and tea or coffee there will also be a book stall and raffle. St Andrew’s: On Sunday at Gargrave parish church there will be a traditional BCP Holy Communion at 8am, and a Pet Service at 10.45am. All pets and their owners are welcome (provided they would fit in the church if the weather is poor).

Fuchsia Show - The Fuchsia and Geranium Show will take place on Sunday at Gargrave Village Hall. Entrance to the public will be from noon until 4pm when the winning exhibits from all over Craven will be on show and there will be numerous fuchsia and geranium plants for sale. Refreshments are available throughout the day and there will also be a raffle and tombola.

Gill Winch: It will be possible for visitors to descend the 340ft main shaft of Gaping Gill, the largest natural cavern in Great Britain, from Saturday August 20 to Monday August 29, when Craven Pothole Club will be running the Gaping Gill winch. The descent costs £15 (includes guided tour of the main chamber) and minimum age is seven years old, at the co-ordinators’ discretion. No advanced bookings are taken so arrive as early as possible; the winch opens at 8am on the weekend and Bank Holidays and 9am on a weekday. Book on arrival at the tent next to the winch.

Photographic Group: Settle Photographic Group will be holding its annual exhibition on Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the Bank Holiday Weekend, in Clapham Village Hall, 11am-5pm. Free entry.

Church News: On Sunday there will be Evensong at 6 pm A recent fundraising meeting focused on the Angel Festival. This will take place on the weekend of October 1 and 2. It is hoped that residents will display an angel of some sort in windows and/or on doors and gates. There will be a workshop in church on Monday September 19, 4-8 pm. The church will have decorative angels in each window and in the chancel.

Village Garden: The Langcliffe Community Garden field now belongs to the village. There will be a meeting of the Trustees in September.

Village Show: The Village Show Catalogue is on the village website. http://langcliffe.myfreewebsites.net and there are copies at the back of church. The members of the Show’s organising body have agreed to provide a ‘Jacob’s Join’ for the judges and stewards. Kate has agreed to coordinate the food and the Institute Committee members are going to act as servers. Graham Jarvis is organising the raffles and if anyone has any prizes please give them to him.

Settle Gill O’Donnell, 01729 825639 Railway Walks: Two walks are planned for this coming weekend. On Saturday there will be a 14-mile moderately strenuous circular walk from Settle taking in Whelp Stones. This leaves Settle at 09.50am. On Sunday there is a Swaledale walk from Hawes to Muker via Great Shunner Fell. This is a 10-mile strenuous walk leaving Ribblehead at 10.28am and making use of public transport to Hawes and for the return journey from Muker to Ribblehead. Throughout the month there will also be free guided walking tours of the Ribblehead Viaduct site and a visit to Blea Moor tunnel each Wednesday. To join a tour, meet at the Heritage Centre on Ribblehead Station at 10.25am for a tour of the viaduct site which lasts about two hours. All participants should wear stout footwear and bring warm and waterproof clothing. Participants who wish to undertake an extended tour of the Ribblehead Viaduct site and visit Blea Moor Tunnel should also meet at 10.25am. Participants wishing to visit Blea Moor Tunnel should bring a packed lunch. No reservation is needed for any of these walks. U3A Session: The U3A group is holding a coffee and chat session at Victoria Hall today, Thursday, from 10.30am onwards to coincide with its enrolment session for 2016-17. Bric-a-Brac: A bric-a-brac sale will take place at Settle Parish Church on Saturday 10am-4pm. There will be home-made refreshments all day with proceeds going to both Giggleswick and Settle parishes.

Photographic Group: The next meeting will take place at Townhead Court on Monday at 7.30pm. The theme will be Black and White photography. Would members please note that the black and white gallery has been postponed and that the theme for August’s gallery is ‘the flowerpot festival.’ Cream Tea: Anchor homes will be holding a cream tea on August 18 at Townhead Court, 2-4pm. Victoria Hall: On Wednesday August 24 the hall welcomes Ricardo García-Curbelo, an innovative performer and one of the most experienced composer-performers of today’s Latin American harp music. On August 30 there will be a talk by Andrew Bradley about The Red Arrows Display Team. Andrew was Chief Engineer for the Hawk aircraft for 10 years and is uniquely placed to give the inside story on the Red Arrows. This event is a fund raising event on behalf of the hall. Embracing Diversity: An outbreak of rainbows is planned in Settle over the coming weeks. In an attempt to combat current international, national and even local gloom and bad news Settle shops are being urged to display a sticker showing a rainbow and declaring that Settle welcomes the world. The idea is to spread a positive feeling about the town and show that as a town we always welcome diversity. Gala Report: Record numbers attended Hellifield Gala on Saturday as the warm weather helped the village celebrate its 47th annual event. It started on the Friday evening, when a ‘Hellifield’s Got Talent’ night was held in the marquee. On Gala Saturday, a procession around the field and the crowning of this year’s Gala Queen, Miss Holly Mounsey, took place at 1pm. Miss Mounsey’s attendants were Charlotte Chapman, Millie-Anne Singleton, Ella-Rae Hardacre, Kian Stanford, and Aston Szpitter. This years judges at the fancy dress were Ruth and James Guilliam from Just Now Designs. Entertainment on the field included a Buckin Bronco, Alpacas, Goats and Donkey, Circus Jim Childrens Entertainer, plus Skipton Majorettes. The Fell Races were well attended. Five-a-side football also took place. On Saturday evening a disco was held in the marquee courtesy of Dale and Mik Cardus. Skipton Lacemakers Guild: The Craven Guild of Lacemakers entry to the National Lace Guilds John Bull Trophy competition entitled ‘Celebrations’ was a picture in lace depicting the 200th Anniversary of the opening of the Leeds and Liverpool canal.The work shows the canal wending its way through Skipton Basin and was made up from individual pieces of lace made by several members and then attached to material and framed. The judging has taken place and members of the group are due to visit the exhibition of all the entries, in August at Farfield Mill, Sedbergh.The group will be holding a celebratory meal in late September at Rhubarb restaurant, Skipton, to mark the 30th anniversary of the guild’s formation.The next meeting will be on Thursday, August 18, at Christchurch, Skipton,10am-3.30pm. Women’s Institute: The Happy Bundays WI enjoyed a lively Solo Salsa dance session led by Carole Hill from the Healthy Lifestyle Studio. Everyone had great fun. The next meeting is on Monday at Champions Church, Skipton at 8pm Amelia and Sarah from Coffee Care will share their story with a presentation and tasting session.

Holy Trinity: On Sunday there will be a Holy Communion service at 8am and a Parish Communion service at 9.45am. On Tuesday the Toddle into Church activities for babies and pre-school children are in the Vestry Rooms 2-3pm. On Wednesday there is Holy Communion at 10.45am using the historical version of the service from The Book of Common Prayer. The Coffee Shop is open from 10am-2pm, Wednesday to Friday, and the Café, with a wider menu, on Saturday 10am-3pm.

Christ Church: Family Eucharist will be celebrated in Christ Church on Sunday at 9.30am and Evening Prayer at 6.30pm.

Earby Earby Gardeners: Earby and District Gardeners are inviting entries for their 73rd Horticultural Show to be held on Saturday at the New Road Community Centre. Schedules are available from Dorothy Bullock 01282 842134, in the New Road Community Centre or can be sent online by contacting davidjhartley@hotmail.com. Lunch will be served from noon and public viewing is from 1pm.

Churches Together: The speaker at the next meeting of Churches Togethers, which will be held in the Centenary Room of the New Road Community Centre on Thursday, August 18, is Melanie Clarke, the Anglican reader at St Thomas’s C of E Church, Barrowford. The meeting will begin at 6.30pm with a two course meal and everyone will be made welcome.

St Peter’s: Frances Oliver will lead the 10.30am service on Sunday at St Peter’s Methodist Church. There is a gentle exercise class at 1:30pm on Monday.

Stainforth Garage Sale: There will be a garage sale in Stainforth on August 20 between 11am and 4pm. A map of the trail can be collected from the village hall, which will also be offering tea and cakes. Nine houses have signed up so far . Money raised will go to Mountain and Cave Rescue. Money raised from refreshments will go the village hall. If you live in Stainforth and would like to sign up for a pitch, please contact Carole Colombi via the village hall website.

Farnhill and Kildwick Joyce Wood, 01535 635880 St Andrew’s: On Sunday there will be a service of Holy Communion at 8.15am and at 10am. On Sunday afternoon the church will be open to visitors 2.30-4.30pm and tea and scones will be served in the Parish Rooms.

Coffee Morning: The Farnhill Methodists’ coffee morning will be held on Saturday in the Kildwick and Farnhill Institute, 10-11.30am. The proceeds are in aid of Parkinson’s UK.

Scarecrow Festival: The Farnhill and Kildwick Scarecrow Festival will be held from Friday, to Sunday, August 21. Sunday will be a family fun day with a barbecue at the White Lion starting from 2pm with prize giving at 5pm. Make and site your own scarecrow, registering it at the White Lion by August 16 (only registered scarecrows will be judged). Cowling Holy Trinity Church: On Saturday morning we are hoping that generous people with either strimmers, shears or even scissors will help us to get the graves tidied up. Please turn up and make us proud of our churchyard.

Barnoldswick St Andrew’s: The Rev David Edmondson will lead the 10.30am Sunday service, which includes the baptism of baby Lily Rose. Then at 3pm there will be a Messy church session on the Barnoldswick Beach followed by an hour of worship and praise. Wendy Fryar will then lead the 6pm service. On Monday at 9am, there will be prayers in the Majestic Church prior to activities on Barnoldswick Beach. A Bible study will be held at Woodlands on Friday, August 19.
