New help for stroke survivors
The Stroke Association will celebrate Stroke Awareness Day on Tuesday by launching its new health promotion service for Harrogate, Craven and District.
Funded by North Yorkshire County Council and run in collaboration with Age Concern, the service is designed to reduce the incidence of strokes.
Stroke survivors and individuals identified as being at high risk of stroke will receive intensive support towards making necessary lifestyle changes in order to better manage the risk factors and decrease their chances of having a further stroke.
Service users will be referred through medical or social care professionals and receive a 12-week healthy lifestyle course, which includes sessions on healthy diets, smoking cessation, cholesterol and blood pressure reduction and exercise. In addition, emotional support will be provided when needed.
Julia MacLeod, regional manager for The Stroke Association, said: "I'm delighted that North Yorkshire County Council is supporting our work to reduce strokes.
"As the leading cause of severe disability in the UK, it is vital that stroke survivors receive ongoing support to help prevent further strokes."
