A woman driver escaped death when her car plunged down a 60-foot ravine in Cowling last night.

The motorist, who is believed to be local, was driving along the A6068 road when her VW Golf failed to negotiate a bend and crashed through a wall near the old toilets and went down the ravine.

She was able to get out of the vehicle, suffering from cuts and bruises. She also complained of pains in her neck and shoulder.

Firefighters and paramedics carried her to a waiting ambulance and she was then taken to Airedale Hospital, where her condition is described as stable.
