Explosion fears after lorry catches fire

The main A629 road was closed for three hours after a white lining lorry, carrying highly flammable propane gas, caught fire at Kildwick roundabout yesterday.

Firefighters from Skipton and Silsden tackled the blaze, which started just before 5pm after the strong winds blew flames from the paint burner onto some plastic material.

It then spread to the rest of the lorry, which was carrying two 19-litre propane gas cylinders and six 47-litre cylinders.

The road was closed amid fears the cylinders might explode and firefighters used water from the nearby River Aire to douse the flames.

"We were concerned that gas cylinders were involved," said a fire service spokesman. "The lorry also had chemicals on board which are used in the white lining process and we had to make sure they did not enter the drains or watercourse."

Experts from the Environment Agency were also called to the scene.

The lorry - which belonged to a Durham-based private road maintenance company - suffered 60 per cent severe fire damage and 20 per cent slight damage The road was reopened at about 8pm.
