Council objects to new supermarket
Developers have amended their plans for a supermarket in Barnoldswick in the same week that town councillors voiced their objections for the first time.
After a public consultation, Maple Grove Developments has reduced the size of the proposed store by a sixth and widened the access from the Butts. The developers have also said they are willing to redesign delivery arrangements and, if necessary, restrict delivery hours.
However, town councillors unanimously recommended the application be refused.
Coun Richard Whiteley, chairman of the planning committee, said the main concerns related to access, a shortage of footpaths and the effect on the town centre.
Coun Margaret Bell said: "To think that they can force cars to access the Butts via single-lane traffic flow, which would be voluntary and without traffic lights, would be absolutely diabolical."

And she described the developer's claim that the supermarket could bring 90 per cent of the people who shopped outside Barnoldswick back into the town as "absolutely ludicrous".
This was echoed by Coun David Whipp, who said the claim was "so unrealistic, it was unbelievable".
"I think the store would suck the lifeblood out of the town," he added.
Coun Keith Bailey said supermarkets aimed to take 60 per cent of trade from existing businesses within the first three months. "Make no bones about it, they want everybody's business. We would end up with a town centre full of takeaways and charity shops," he said.
Residents will get their say on the revised proposals at a public meeting being held by Maple Grove Developments at the Rainhall Centre, Barnoldswick, between 2.30pm and 7.30pm on Monday.
And, on Thursday, electors will get the chance to vote on the question: "Do the residents of Barnoldswick support the proposed new supermarket development on the Butts?" The poll was given the go-ahead at the annual town meeting, even though it was initially thought the West Craven Committee could have determined the application beforehand. However, the committee will now consider the plans at a future meeting.
Residents can vote in the poll between 4pm and 9pm at their usual polling stations.

Dont worry.. Just over the border it is actually 2008, and working int' mill isnt the be all and end all to life!
How about harnessing some change and getting some money poured into that sorry town? Shops that cannot survive must diversify. If we are completely honest its not like Barlick is a shopping mecca now is it!

yes i agree with a new supermarket but not in the butts area.its got about the worst access in barlick.the reason i say yes to a new supermarket is just go into the co-op and see the prices.even dick turpin wore a mask.also the councillors say they dont want a new supermarket is because they would lose all the shop rents. and the diabollical council tax.also if i earned £42,000 a year i would shop in the co-op because i could afford too.yes i am one of those that scuttle out of town at the weekend to asda or morrisons where my money goes a lot further.i have a wife and 3 children.i save between £30 and £50 per week shopping elsewhere.coun bailey cannot of been in barlick town centre in the last 10 years.because it is a town full of takeaways and charity shops.i thought he would know that as a so called councillor.i work 55-60hours a week for around £300net.i have a morgage a car to run.petrol gone up.council tax gone up.gas and electric gone up.but no pay rise for the third year in a row .i work in the haulage buissness and it is taking a battering with cheap imports goverment taxes on fuel.i am even stopped from getting a part time job by this fantastic goverment because i drive a lorry.but yet a councillor can work 100 hours a week.and have 5 jobs.somthing not right here. so as the first post says come out of the past and welcome to the future.the future is bright ,the future is not the over priced, under stocked,shelf empty,corner shop called the co-op
