Town says 'no' to supermarket

Residents in Barnoldswick have voted against plans for a supermarket in the town.

A town poll took place last Thursday to give residents a chance to have their say about a new store on the Butts.

Some 395 votes were counted, of which 303 were against the development and 91 in favour, with one spoiled ballot paper.

However, the result will not be binding on Pendle councillors who are due to make a decision on the application in the next few weeks.

The supermarket plans have been put forward by Maple Grove Developments.

Barnoldswick Town Council has already signalled its opposition to the application, which has been lodged with Pendle Borough Council.

Objectors say the supermarket is not in the right location and that the roads are too narrow for lorries to access.

Town councillor Jenny Purcell said: "The people of this town have exercised their democratic right to vote and they don't want this supermarket. People are not against a supermarket in the right location, but this is slap bang in the wrong place.

"The electorate have turned around and told Pendle Council planners and the West Craven Committee their views on this.

"The fact is that this is a conservation area and we do not need a supermarket there. If we get one then we are going to be a ghost town."
