Rohilla lifeboat being restored
The former lifeboat used to rescue passengers from the hospital ship Rohilla, including men from Barnoldswick, is being restored to its former glory.
The William Riley lifeboat, based in Whitby, was badly damaged after going to the rescue of the stricken Rohilla in 1914.
The hospital ship was travelling from Scotland to Dunkirk when it ran aground near Whitby during a storm.
Despite the best efforts of crew from the William Riley, 84 people drowned on the Rohilla, including 12 men from Barnoldswick.
The lifeboat, which vanished in 1934 and appeared again as a lot on eBay in 2005, is currently being restored to its former glory.
Colin Brittain, who wrote a book on the Rohilla, said: "It recently had a short test launch and there is expected to be an official unveiling of the boat soon."
