A weekend to remember is promised at two Keighley district locations where thousands of Tour de France spectators will be congregating this July.

Victoria Park in Keighley and Central Park in Haworth will both be official spectator hubs for the July 5 and 6 weekend.

The company in charge of co-ordinating the hubs – Tour de France Hub 2014 Ltd – confirmed the decision last Wednesday.

The two days of entertainment at Victoria Park are being arranged by Keighley Town Council.

Councillor Tony Wright, chairman of the council’s events and leisure committee, said the venue will feature a giant television screen so people can watch the race, a funfair, performances by bands and street entertainment.

“We want there to be a carnival atmosphere, as we’d like to make it enough of a draw to keep people in town a little longer,” he explained. “It should be a good starting point for people wanting to see the race and enjoy the day.”

The Victoria Park site is expected to be able to accommodate about 4,500 people.

Coun Wright said there will be stewards and security staff on hand, and refreshments in Victoria Hall, as well as information on the best, safest vantage points to view the race.

Entertainment at the hub in Haworth’s Central Park is being arranged by a community group led by the Worth the Tour organisation members.

Haworth Main Street trader, Nikki Carroll, said in addition to the big screen the park will host stalls, a beer tent and a children’s circus workshop.

“This will be on both days of the weekend,” she added. “We’ll be able to use the new bandstand for the live entertainment.

“In Haworth, we’re used to managing large crowds, and we will work closely with Bradford Council to ensure it’s a safe and enjoyable event for everybody.

“I think it will be phenomenal.”
