For the second time in four days Town came from two goals down to win a cup tie 4-2.

Unlike last Tuesday’s FA Vase win over Maine Road, Town needed extra-time to complete the task. in this North West Counties League Challenge Cup tie.

Two late goals by strikers Paul Fildes and Mark Threlfall ultimately decided the game and clinched a home tie against Formby in the next round on February 16.

Town opted to give starts to Chris Ridehalgh, Kevin Richardson and Paul Fildes, while Liam Blades was handed the captaincy.

Before Town had found their feet they were a goal down. Mark Battersby capitalised on a rare Bill Williams error to score after nine minutes.

Marko Marosi made two smart saves before Nathan Bond made it 2-0.

Glossop continued to carve out chances with Sam Marshall rattling the crossbar.

Town regrouped at half-time and went close straight after the interval when Threlfall’s header hit the bar after a bright attack.

The home side had a lucky escape when Marshall’s shot hit the bar but rebounded down to safety.

Skipper Blades started the revival when he fired home from ten yards after 61 minutes.

Blades also had a hand in the equaliser when his low cross was back-heeled into the net by Neil Chapman after 79 minutes.

In the closing minutes Fildes and Thompson both tested goalie Ben Proctor.

Town looked the stronger side in extra time and went ahead when Threlfall played a great ball to Fildes on the edge of the Glossop penalty area.

He threaded the ball past Proctor and two defenders desperately trying to save the situation.

With virtually the last kick Threlfall put the match beyond Glossop. He picked the ball up just outside the penalty area and curled a shot round the desperate dive of Proctor into the far corner. The ball hit the foot of the post as it went in.
