It was hardly flaming June – more like flaming cold January – as the cricketers of Settle kept cool to defeat North Ribblesdale Rugby Club in a Twenty/20 game played in the Marshfield snowdrifts on Saturday.

Before the match the players observed a minute’s silence for John Walker, pictured left, a member of both clubs who died recently.

No doubt he would have raised a chuckle at seeing the two teams playing in conditions that weren’t made for cricket.

Settle batted first on a soft pitch which soon dusted up and thanks to a generous offering of 30 extras – made up of wides and snow balls – they reached 69.

Perhaps thinking they could immitate aptly named former England star John Snow, pace bowlers Eddy Read and Tom Davidson gave the North Ribb batsmen a snow-melting exhibition.

Opener Jack Walker, son of John, was voted man of the match for his 18, but the rugby players – were bowled out for 60.
