10:34pm Thursday 7th February 2013 in Sport
Giggleswick’s Euan Brennan highlighted a sterling performance by Craven athletes at the finals of the North Yorkshire Schools Cross-Country Championships at Knaresborough on Saturday.
Brennan and his school colleague Tom Humphries recorded a notable “one two” in the year 7 boys event.
The pair stayed on strongly in the closing stages to overhaul the early pace-setters.
Also high in the order in the same race and likewise winning his county colours was Ermysted’s Tom Barrett who finished 11th.
All the athletes competing last Saturday had earned their places via their respective area championships.
Brennan, Humphries and Barrett will now represent North Yorkshire in a Five Counties fixture on Saturday at Guisborough.
The top 16 runners from each age-groups qualified for county team selection. Craven will be well represented which is a reflection of the enthusiasm and dedication of the area’s runners.
The Giggleswick trio of Eve Hutchinson, Amy Corn- elius, and Isabel Feather – who finished fifth, 13th and 16th in the year 7 girls race, all earned county selection.
For year 7 athletes, this Saturday’s representative fixture at Guisborough is as far as progression extends. However, for all contesting the higher age-groups at Knaresborough there was also the prize of an automatic place in the forthcoming English Schools finals for runners finishing in the top six.
Those who finished seventh to 16th have the chance to battle for the remaining two English Schools places in their respective age-groups at Guisborough.
Three Craven athletes, Sam Haggar, of Craven College, Tom Blanchard (Ermysted’s) and Matt Thompson (Ermysted’s) all secured English Schools places at the first attempt.
Meanwhile other locals in contention are, Georgia Birley (Giggleswick) who finished eighth in the senior girls event and the Erm- ysted’s trio of James Bruce, Max Hamer and Robert Thompson, who finished ninth, 13th and 14th respectively in the iIntermediate boys.
Also getting another chance are Enno Kramer (Giggleswick), and Harry Whyte (Ermysted’s), who were 15th and 16th respectively in the senior boys.
In the junior boys James Lund (Ermysted’s), Peter Bowles (Giggleswick) and George Roe (Ermysteds) were tenth, 15th and 16th respectively.
Tilly Melechi, (Skipton Girls High), and Samantha Baker-Jones (Giggleswick) were 14th and 16th respectively in the junior girls event.
