Threlfall double seals Barnoldswick win
10:02am Thursday 14th February 2013 in Sport
Barnoldswick Town 2 Ashton Athletic 1
Mark Threlfall scored twice as Town recorded their second-successive Premier Divi sion win on Saturday.
Once again their resources were stretched and with goalkeeper Billy Carrington unavailable they had to sign Settle United’s Samuel Arrowsmith to deputise.
Tom Bradley, signed from Padiham in midweek also made his debut at left back while Ashley Alderson and Billy Priestley returned after suspension.
On the down side, Aaron Hollindrake was ruled out by injury and fellow striker Paul Fildes – one of Town’s joint managers – was working.
There was a lot of neat passing but no cutting edge from either side until the 18th minute when Ashton went ahead.
Shaun Airey committed a foul out wide on the Town left and from the resulting free kick by Paul Casey, Ashton scored.
Arrowsmith collected the ball comfortably on his goal line, but then allowed it to bounce out of his grasp into the path of Martyn Jackson who prodded it home.
Lewis Jordan and Airey had efforts cleared off the line before Town equalised in the 40th minute. Bradley crossed from out wide to around the penalty spot.
David Moran running out of goal never made it and Threlfall headed over the stranded keeper into the net.
There were chances at both ends before Town scored their winning goal in the 52nd minute.
A Blades cross was slightly behind Threlfall so his header looped up towards Moran’s goal. Everyone seemed surprised when it dipped under the bar into the net.
Late in the game James Nettleton had to clear a Smith shot from almost on the goalline.
Town play Formby at home in the League Cup on Saturday before visiting Colne in the Premier Division on Tuesday.
