Skipton go from rock bottom to champions in just one year
Skipton’s cricketers have clinched the Aire-Wharfe League Division Three title – just 12 months after finishing rock bottom.
They wrapped up the championship with two games to go and in time for skipper Graham Summer- gill’s holiday, with a five-wicket win over New Rover.
Old stagers Steve Carling (52no) and Summersgill (50) helped them overcome New Rover’s score of 156.
Summersgill said: “It has been a great team effort and something that everybody has worked hard to achieve. I wanted it wrapped up before I went away.”
He added: “After last season we took the decision not to have an overseas player and brought in three experienced players, Richard Nichols, Arshad Latif and Faisal Hussain instead.
“They have all played their part but the most pleasing part of our success has been the performance of our three outstanding young players Keir Nelson, Izaac Beck and Ben Holderness.
“They have made important contributions at key times and have shown great maturity. It is so important for a club like ours to produce home-grown players.”
Summersgill is now hoping that neighbours Upper Wharfedale can clinch the second promotion spot.
They are currently one point ahead on pre-season favourites Horsforth.
“We had two close games with them this season and it will be good to have a derby matchas there are a lot of Leeds teams in Division Two.It will be good for both of us.”
