Bacup & Rossendale Borough 0 Barnoldswick Town 2
Another good solid starting line-up, who were looking to build on the draw against Norton United last Saturday and the away win at Colne a week ago. A
wet and windy night up on the hills of Bacup promised a difficult night for the players of both sides.
The opening passage of the match was played at a good pace, both teams wanting to go forward but the respective defences keeping the forwards at arm’s length.
The first chance came for Town after eight minutes, a free kick awarded just outside the Bacup penalty area was taken by Mark Threlfall, his shot hit the Bacup wall and was deflected towards Ashlea Gotham’s left hand post, Gotham diving to tip the ball round the post for a corner.
Bacup reacted immediately; a swift move down the Town right a minute later saw Marcus Calvert screw his shot wide of Jake Chadwick’s left-hand post.
Bacup were next to threaten after 21 minutes, a neat flowing move by Aaron Kirk, Luke Morgan and Simon Thompson had Town Captain Bill Williams cutting Thompson’s cross out at the near post.
Town swiftly replied when Conner Smith released Mark Threlfall into the Bacup penalty area, Gotham saving low down at the near post a minute later.
Bacup won a corner on the Town left, it was swung over towards the penalty spot, Bacup centre half Mike Harling sending a header downwards towards the Town left hand post, Chadwick in the Town diving to tip the ball round the post for another Bacup corner.
Bacup had a good chance after 33 minutes, Chadwick slicing a clearance straight to Thompson 30 yards out, his attempt at goal was sliced wide when if it had been on target he would surely have scored.
The second half though not a frenetic as the first saw no clear cut chances for either side until the 62nd minute.
Aaron Hollindrake putting Sam Howell through and he blasted his shot in at the near post as Gotham tried to narrow the angle.
Bacup rallied and won a free kick 30 yards out Luke Morgan took the kick, the ball bouncing of the Town wall, Chadwick having to dive to tip the ball round the post for a corner.
A double substitution for Bacup after 69 minutes saw Thompson and Harling making way for Butorins and Socha.
Town went two up after 78 minutes, Gareth Wager being booked for a foul on Howell just outside the Bacup penalty area. Town captain Bill Williams smashed the resulting free kick past Gotham.
Town substituted Hollindrake who had done a tremendous amount of work, bringing on Craig Bradshaw after 80 minutes.
Chadwick was brought into the action again two minutes later, diving to hold onto a shot from Matthew Bryan, keeping hold of the ball in the greasy conditions.
A substitution by both teams after 83 minutes saw Bacup send on Boic Nhwziyo for Aaron Kirkwhile Town replaced Neil Stansfield with Kieran Lee.
The final action of a really good match came from Town’s Howell. He managed to screw the ball inches wide of the far post when it looked like he must score.
Another good performance by Town, just what was needed before the FA Vase match with Newcastle Benfield, away on Saturday.
