Wharfedale earn credit in defeat
ON THE CHARGE: Wharfedale’s Tom Barrett escapes a tackle in his side’s narrow defeat to Loughborough Students

Wharfedale can take a lot of heart from this encounter with Loughborough Students as they competed in every department.
There were mistakes from both sides but a commitment to move the ball led to a fast-paced game.
Wharfedale had the better territory and possession and led 6-3, with Tom Barrett kicking two penalties and Alex Davis successful for the visitors.
Direct running and poor decisions allowed Lough-borough to run in two tries. The first was scored by George Eastwell after a poor clearance led to good running from Henry Taylor.
The second was set up by full back Jack Pons, who ran a poor clearance straight back at Wharfedale and set up Chris Surman. Davis kicked both conversions for a 17-6 lead.
A Wharfedale drive led to Edward Taylor being yellow-carded and Barrett reducing the deficit to eight points at half-time.
Another penalty saw him close the gap further before Jacob Albon was sent to the sin bin after more pressure. Wharfedale took advantage as Barrett scored their only try which he also converted.
Another Barrett penalty gave Dale a 20-17 lead but they lost Luke Cole to the sin-bin after the kick-off, which allowed Rhys Owen to score after a flowing move. A fourth try for the students came from prop Akinbiyio Alo before Barrett landed two more penalties to leave Dale just short.
