Settle United 4 Mount St Mary’s 0

Settle produced a fine performance to seal their place in the quarter-finals of the West Riding County FA Challenge Trophy.

The Mastab’s Craven League Division One side made a slow start on a heavy pitch.

It took a fantastic save from Sam Arrowsmith, tipping a dipping volley over the bar, to spark Settle into life.

Settle started to exert pressure on their opponents’ goal and it told after 20 minutes.

A cross from Danny Bathers was only palmed into the path of John Beckwith by the St Mary’s goalkeeper, and he had time and space to shoot into a open goal.

With Settle now camped in their opponents’ half it was only a matter of time before the second goal came. With the last play of the first half a Matthew Cardus cross was powerfully headed home by Lee Walker.

A change of formation by Mount St Mary’s in the second half didn’t help their cause as Settle again dominated possession.

A fine run down the left wing by Beckwith left him one on one with the keeper.

The striker passed into the path of Walker who slotted the ball into an empty net for his second goal and Settle’s third of the afternoon.

The goal of the game came from Matthew Cardus who hit a volley from just inside the penalty area and into the far corner of the goal.

This was Settle’s best performance for a number of weeks and now they will visit Rothwell Town in the last eight.
