There was a popular winner of the Skipton and District Bowling League’s season-opening Jeff Clark Spring Floodlight individual competition.

Peter Clark, son of the former Whinswood and Lund Park bowler who the event is named after, lifted the trophy.

The Devon bowler defeated Martyn Loftus of Crosshills 21-16 in the final at Addingham to lift a trophy which has special meaning for his family.

Once again this year the competition was well supported with 64 entries playing at four qualifying greens on Tuesday evening. Two qualifiers from each green went forward to the final on Thursday.

The qualifying rounds saw holder Richard Hargreaves go through from Crosshills along with Silsden’s Barry Turnbull.

The Crosshills pair of David Scott and Loftus both qualified at Cononley, while Nigel Breadley who plays for Silsden Playing Fields qualified at Silsden BC along with Cononley’s Stuart Myers.

Winner Clark qualified at Keighley where David Leeming of Settle took the last place in the final.

The quarter-final draw pitted Hargreaves against Scott and it was the latter who found his feet first, but Hargreaves soon pulled back to lead 10-8. It was all Scott from then on as he went on to win 21-11.

Clark looked to be in good form as he set up 15-6 lead against Myers, but his opponent did not fold.

Myers battled on before finally losing 21-14.

Breadley had a narrow 13-12 lead after 15 ends against Leeming before finding his mark to run out a 21-14 victory.

Turnbull and Loftus soon found the green to their liking. Turnbull forced a 14-11 lead but Loftus was not to be stopped as he turned the game round with a 21-17 win. The first semi-final saw the 2009 winner Scott up against the 2010 runner up Clark and both players set off well with some good woods, but Clark held the edge as he eased into his dream final.

He knew would have to be on top form as Loftus was producing some top bowling and saw off Breadley 21-13 in the other semi-final.

Loftus sent out the first wood of the final a nice touching bowl, but ended up two down as Clark ran the jack.

Clark went into an 8-4 lead but Loftus soon pulled back to 9-9. Clark once again went clear to lead 14-10 before Loftus fought back to 16-16.

Clark was not going to let this chance to win the trophy go and put in four good ends to take the title with a 21-16 victory.
