Settle United 2, Honley 2

(after extra-time) (Settle won 5-4 on penalties)

Two penalty saves from Settle keeper Sam Arrowsmith ensured that they won this West Riding County FA Challenge Trophy final in a sudden-death shoot-out.

Hosts Settle got off to a perfect start when they opened the scoring in the first five minutes.

A long clearance from Arrowsmith was headed on by David Worthington into the path of John Beckwith, and his pace took him clear of the Honley defence.

Faced with a one-on-one with the keeper, Beckwith calmly slid the ball past him into the goal.

Huddersfield & District League side Honley, who kept possession and broke at pace, gradually came into the game and really started to threaten.

They equalised when they broke down the right wing, and the ball was squared into the path of the on-rushing midfielder who side-footed it into the far corner.

The second half started evenly, with both sides having decent amounts of possession, but Honley took the lead.

A defence-splitting pass was run onto by the opposition centre forward, who just got to the ball ahead of Arrowsmith and his delicate chip made the score 2-1.

However, Honley started to tire, with numerous players going down with cramp and a couple having to be substituted.

This enabled Settle to really exert pressure, but the Honley defence held firm until the second minute of stoppage-time when a Danny Bathers shot was only parried into the path of Worthington, who slotted home, sending the large home crowd into raptures.

Extra-time was an even affair, with the best chance falling to Worthington, who headed wide from six yards out, and so it went to penalties.

Settle missed their first two efforts from Worthington and Beckwith and Honley scored their first but put their second wide.

United scored the next three of their allotted five through, Baines, Bathers and player-manager Shaun Airey. Honley scored two and Arrow-smith saved one, sending the tie into sudden death.

Settle scored through Elliott Firth but Honley replied, Lee Walker calmly slotted home for Settle and Arrow-smith saved, sending the Settle players and fans wild.
