Skipper Michael Rhodes knows just how much it would mean to Steeton if they win the West Riding County FA Challenge Cup for the first time.

The Chevrons take on Bradford side Field in the final on Monday (7pm) at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground in one of the biggest occasions in the club’s history.

Victory would see Rhodes claim a fourth winners’ medal, having won it three times at Silsden along with team-mate Andy Holden, but the right back is just as motivated to win for the club’s hard-working staff.

He said: “Lifting the cup would be absolutely fantastic, not just on a personal level but also for the club’s management and those who have been involved here for a long time.

“Our manager Roy Mason puts in an awful lot of time and effort, and he’s not the only one.

“Albert Bates has been with the club for 55 years as a player, manager, assistant, secretary and now groundsman.

“He was so happy when we won the semi-final – I don’t think you could put it into words how he’ll feel if we win it.

“Albert has been a great servant of the club and there are others.”

Rhodes accepts his side are the underdogs against opponents who are chasing a triple and are currently lying third in the West Yorkshire League Premier Division.

The Bradford outfit have already won the Bradford & District FA Senior Cup and the West York-shire League Cup.

Rhodes said: “Field will be favourites as they have been on a long winning run, whereas we have a had a few poor results.”

However, the defender is hoping Steeton’s fantastic supporters can roar them on to victory like they did in their 1-0 semi-final win over Goole United.

The 32-year-old, who got the winner from the spot, said: “We took 200-plus fans and they were absolutely brilliant – they never shut up!

“I’ve played in quite a few semi-finals and I can safely say I have never heard backing like that. Hopefully it will be even bigger and better in the final.”

Steeton are aiming to become the first team from the West Riding County Amateur League to lift the cup since Bay Athletic in 2011. Rhodes, who has played for the league’s representative side, said: “We’ve had e-mails from other wishing us all the best and saying ‘bring the trophy back for our league’.”

Steeton’s route to the final – 1st round: Denholme United (home, 7-0); 2nd round: Alwoodley (home, 6-4); 3rd round: Beeston St Anthony’s (away, 2-1); 4th round: Oxenhope Rec (home, 3-0); Quarter-finals: Brighouse Town Reserves (home, 3-0); Semi-finals: Goole United (1-0 at Woodlesford).
