THE Skipton Inter District Veterans kept the bandwagon rolling with another important win against last year's league winners Halifax making it four wins out of four matches to date and beating them 31-25.

The seeds were set for this win by the home team playing at Gargrave having a great result and winning by 21-7 with six winners to two.

The best winners were Arnie Ripley 21-6, Terry Birch 21-9 and David Jacques 21-10.

The away team did not fair so well, but with Cliff Taylor and Alan Pennington both winning 21-15 and no poor results, they limited the defeat to 18 -10.

The next match will be Friday June 27 against table-topping Huddersfield. The home match will again be played at Gargrave commencing at 1.30 pm.

The Yorkshire County E E Cockcroft Handicap qualifying round took place at Broughton Road.

The competition was well supported with 16 entries chasing the two places in the final.

With good bowling throughout the evening it came down to two semi-final matches to decide the qualifiers. Martyn Cox of Gargrave faced Dave Smith from Craven, while Steve Longley of Gargrave met Devon bowler Graham Perry.

Steve Longley had bowled very well throughout the evening, the final match saw no let up as he raced into a 12-3 lead, Perry did recover to trail 16-11, but could find no more as Longley went through 21-11.

The other match proved to be much closer as Cox got the slightly better start, but Dave Smith soon recovered to make it 9-9 after 11 ends.

Cox then found top gear as he motored away to reach 20-12, Smith did his best to retrieve the situation, but could not get out of trouble as Cox joined qualified 21-18.

The final is at Thornhill Cricket and Bowling Club on Sunday, June 29 start 2 pm.

The Clarkson Cup first round involved 16 teams, while the same number took part in a supplementary cup.

Last week;s matches produced no major shocks, but Silsden had to pull out all the stops. Silsden had four good winners early against Addingham A with Barry Turnbull 21-2 the best, to pull back a lot of the 75 handicap.

The middle four games saw Addingham retain a 25-point lead as Nigel Twist 21-10 and Gordon Dick 21-7 achieved good results.

But the last two match ups saw saw Alan Thornber 21-3 and Mick Hall 21-6 win to put Silsden back on course to take the match 205-198.

Lund Park A got of to a flyer in their match against Oxenhope with three winners in the first four. Gary Bowdin's 21-8 triumph was the pick as Lund established a lead of 37 points.

The winners then went to Oxenhope but close matches kept Lund Park in the lead.

Pauline Lighthowler won 21-13 for Lund to put the pressure on Oxenhope's last two bowlers.

Steve Griffiths and Fred Rothwell were up to the challenge. Both won 21-4 and swung the match round to secure a 211-206 victory.

Cononley's A and B teams met at Devon. Although Cononley B put up a good effort they could only manage one winner, Lee Smith 21-16.

The A team made sure there were no surprises with Jim Calvert 21-6 being their best winner in a 205-193 victory.

Crosshills A took on their B team at Addingham and made light work of the tie as they returned ten winners. David Scott 21-3 achieved the best result as they went through 210-172.

The cup holders Devon A went to Grassington to take on Settle A giving away 35 points to their rivals.

The early winners went to Settle as they increased their lead to 48, Devon did pull points back, but when Settle skipper John Chambers won 21-7 the match was over as Settle went through 212-192.

Craven A got the better of Broughton Road A with a 218-191 win, while Gargrave A dropped just one point in a 254-194 win against Colne Legion B.

Steve Longley produced the best performance with a 21-4 victory .

In the Supplementary Cup the closest tie saw First Division Oakworth pushed all the way by Third Division Steeton B.

Oakworth had to give 50 points start away and they needed fine performances from Liz Bland and Rob Laird to turn the match around.

Both players trailed 20-14 but hit back to record super 21-20 victories.

Wins for Ian Shepherd 21-19 and Keith Claydon 21-4 had Steeton B in charge but Nigel Graeme 21-8 pulled the match out of the fire for Oakworth as they went through 251-249.

The top team in this cup are Cone Cricket Club who are on a handicap of 30. They will be giving a start in all their matches.

Their first saw them give 40 points to Silsden Playing Fields B, but that proved to be no problem as they went through 232-201, with Glen Hartley and Claire Russell both winning 21-3.

Sutton A really got to grips with the Gargrave green as Colne Legion A were all at sea.

The Sutton side had nine winners with Sue Finnie winning 21-0 in a 242-142 win.

Steeton A proved to be to strong for Rolls Royce at Colne Cricket, with eight winners. Alden Phillips triumphed 21-7 in a 253-215 win.

Two Skipton teams, Whinfield A and Devon B met at Craven. The Whinfield A team soon had control of the match, as they adapted to the green much better than their opponents.

With seven winners they had the game under control, before Gary Hodge and Keith Raynor both 21-8 finished of a good night 253-202.

Keighley B may be struggling in the First Division but they came up trumps in this cup match against Craven.

With nine winners led by June Wilson 21-6, the match was never in doubt as they recorded a 264-214 victory.

The final result that is to hand saw Grassington get the better of Broughton Road B, with six winners in the first seven games the match was always in Grassington’s control, as they had plenty of good winners in a 257-215 win.
