JAMIE Ridehalgh secured the biggest win of his career in the Tickhill Grand Prix in Doncaster last Sunday.

The 15-year-old had to get special dispensation to take on the seniors and he made the most of his opportunity.

Despite having ridden in the under-16 event less than an hour before, the talented Bradley youngster powered his way to the front of a 100 rider field on a narrow town-centre circuit, winning the final sprint and taking home a £250 first prize.

Ridehalgh, who is a year 11 pupil at Ermysted’s Grammar School in Skipton and is sponsored by Damart of Bingley, continued the great form he showed on a recent trip to Belgium where his best result was a fifth-placed finish in a 70k road race.

His results at national level have also been impressive.

He won a bronze medal in the under-16 British National Road Race in Essex last month, in what is only his first of two years in the age category.

Once again, it was his strong finish on a 500 metre climb that saw him win the bunch sprint by five lengths, just failing to catch two riders who broke away two laps before.

This weekend he will represent Yorkshire in the Sainsbury’s UK School Games over three days at Manchester Velodrome. He will compete in six endurance events on the track including the points race, team pursuit and his favoured event, the individual pursuit.
