SUTTON clay pigeon shooter Shaun Wood has had a busy and successful summer.

After making his Great Britain junior debut in June in the European Championships, he was picked on the England Talent Pathway Programme (ETPP) – an important stepping stone towards the Olympic Games – won national medals in two events, competed for England and won a World Championship junior medal.

Shaun's first foray abroad was to the European Championships in Portugal, where he was ranked as the tenth-best junior and, on getting back home, discovered that he had been offered a place on the ETPP.

This programme is a collaboration between UK Sport and the English Institute of Sport and is intended to secure success at future Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

Acceptance into the programme meant that Shaun has attended various training days, shooting Olympic disciplines at Nuthampstead in Hertfordshire.

Later in June, he helped Yorkshire to team gold at the English Automatic Ball Trap (ABT) Open at Brook Bank in Cheddar, where he took a junior bronze medal and, nearer to home in Beverley, Shaun took silver at the United Kingdom Universal Trench Championship.

Following these, he was selected for both the Universal Trench World Championships in Italy in August, where he shot 25 out of 25 clays and won a junior team bronze, and the ABT British Open and Home International in Inverness last month.

Shaun was the leading junior there after shooting 190 out of 200 clays, but, by his own admission, he folded under pressure in the final round and dropped to second in both competitions.

However, England juniors did win the overall title.

Shaun has two more competitions left this season before embarking on some hard training this winter in readiness for next year.
