NOT even facing a side two divisions below them in the Northern Plant Hire Trophy could help Embsay notch a first victory of the season.

The Mastab's Craven League whipping boys were beaten 5-2 at home to Salts, who are third from bottom in their section.

There was no better news for under-strength Sutton, who are two places below Salts, as they fell 7-2 at home to well-drilled Division One visitors Colne. Rob Matthews and Lucasz Sarosinski scored for the hosts, whose man of the match was Josh Smith.

Cowling lost their all-Premier Division tie 5-2 at Earby Town.

In the Premier Division Cup, the clash between third-placed Rolls and Skipton LMS in fourth was predictably close, going to extra-time before Rolls won it 4-2, the score being 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Man of the match Jonathan McGeadie proved the difference with a hat-trick for Rolls, whose other goal came from substitute Liam Garbutt. Robert Bingham and Luke Howsen replied.

Cononley Sports had a solid 3-1 victory at Grindleton to also progress, Craig Gregory setting them on their way with a first-half brace – his second goal being a belter as he turned his marker and blasted the ball home left-footed.

Grindleton's goal was also unstoppable – a 25-yard free-kick – but with the wind against in the second half, they battled hard but eventually conceded a third to Colin Throupe.

Ten-man Bradley needed a last-minute screamer from Zach Conway to defeat visitors Cononley Sports Reserves 2-1 in a Division One Cup derby.

The hosts top and tailed this tie with goals as their first came inside 20 seconds when Oliver Butterfield skipped past three players on the left before crossing for Robert Watson to side-foot home.

The second string equalised midway through the half via Dan Leeming, who looked offside but played to the whistle when Bradley stopped, and they hit the bar three times in the second half.

Bradley had Martin Brown sent off for a second bookable offence but dug deep and were rewarded by Conway's 20-yard howitzer.

Home manager Tony Piotrowicz was unhappy with the standard of refereeing but added: "Cononley put a lot of effort into the game, although it was a good performance on the whole from us. We played some excellent football in patches."

There was a choice tie in the first round of the Division Two Cup, with third-placed Grassington United Reserves hosting leaders Manningham All Stars.

Adam Steventon's brace was not enough for the reserves, who lost 4-2, while Skipton LMS Reserves went down 4-1 at home to Oxenhope Recreation Thirds, only scoring when the visitors made several substitutions in the second half.

Barnoldswick Barons pulled off a shock in the Division Three Cup, the 12th-placed hosts defeating fourth-placed Skipton Town Reserves 5-3 after extra-time, with the full-time score being 3-3.

Cross Hills Reserves were also tested at Barlick Wanderers but won 6-3 to bounce back from the previous week's heavy defeat in the Keighley & District FA Supplementary Cup.

Hills opted to play with the elements first and were 4-2 ahead at half-time, thanks to an own goal and efforts from Jimmy Anson (2) and Tom Storrie. Anson added more goals in the second half with a 25-yard curler and a header.

Sam Wedgewood and Callum Lowe were menacing up front for the visitors and Jack Harrison was combative in midfield.

Hills were also assured at the back, despite conceding three – but that could not be said for Bradley Reserves, who lost 5-0 at Ilkley.

In the Premier Division, Tarek Issa-inspired Grassington United stay in front, despite being held 1-1 at Trawden Celtic – but they only lead on goal difference after Cross Hills left it late before winning 2-1 at home to Settle United.

Will Storrie opened the scoring for Hills in the first half but Settle equalised when Shaun Airey bravely dived in among the flying boots to head home after a shot had been pushed onto the bar by goalkeeper Luke Daniel.

Stuart Parkin's winner – he headed in Rob Matthews' corner kick – almost came at the final whistle.

Hosts Gargrave are top of Division One but next-to-bottom Ingrow & Worth Valley still missed several chances before being beaten 2-1.

Only goal difference separates Gargrave from Skipton Town, who were held 1-1 by mid-table visitors Bingley Town. Jake Thompson netted for Skipton, whose man of the match was Philip Clayton.

Silsden Whitestar are up to third on the back of a 7-2 home defeat of Rolls Reserves, who took the lead when Liam Swain was penalised for a blatant trip in the area.

However, JJ Berry scored for Whitestar after a mazy run from halfway and, just before the break, Ben O'Melia slotted home after good work by man of the match Andy Kay.

Rolls levelled straight from the restart but were then routed. Sam Stanfield got a brace, O'Melia scored again and there were goals from Simon Cox (his first for his new club) and Mark Bradley.

Whitestar manager Gary Lund said: "We needed the win after being unlucky in the last two games against Skipton.

"It puts us back in contention in the league with an important weekend visit to Old Centralians in the West Riding County FA Challenge Trophy on Saturday. We will be going there on a high."

Goals from Adam Smith, Ian Wildman and Samuel Woodrow gave hosts Settle United Reserves a 3-1 victory against Earby Town Reserves in Division Two.

Carleton lead Division Three as Joshua Banks, Gareth Lord and Daniel Thompson were on target in a 3-2 win over visitors Trawden Celtic Reserves.

Man of the match for Cowling Reserves in their 4-0 home defeat to Pendle Renegades Reserves was Samuel Dudman.
