IN one of his rare British appearances, Silsden multi-world trials champion Dougie Lampkin triumphed in Bradford District Motor Club's annual Boxing Day Trial at Howden Wood.

Despite slippery conditions, he rode his factory Gas Gas machine for a loss of a mere three penalties to finish ahead of Halifax international Jack Challoner and East Morton landlord Martin Crosswaite.

Only sixteen expert-ranked competitors competed on the hard course, planned by Bradford officials Jason Dunning and Dave Pickles. Only the top three riders kept the scores in single figures.

Dougie’s cousins James Lampkin and Dan Hemingway were fourth and fifth ahead of 2014 Yorkshire trials champion Sam Yeadon.

On the Clubman A course Slaithwaite youth William Tolson swept aside all his adult rivals to win the class. Chris Ward took the novice class ahead of Barrowford’s Phil Scott, who won the over-40s class.

The event proved popular for Clubman B contenders as 47 riders entered the class. Barnoldswick engineer Anthony Ayrton triumphed on his own hybrid Honda machine, which he built while recovering from a broken collarbone.

Keighley's Joe Fox was first in youth class A.

The event, held in honour of the popular Denholme official who died in November, raised funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Fell Rescue Association, with a sum of £800 being divided between the two.

Both services rendered rapid and competent services when club member Andy Howe was seriously injured at Addingham Moorside back in March.

Silsden’s Paul Whitham supervised the fourteen small wheelers who sampled an eight-section three-lap course taking in some tricky streams. Dominic Horne was too experienced for Keighley's Myles Hutchinson and Morgan Shepherd on the mid-course.
