West Riding County Women's League League Cup quarter-final: Silsden 2 Keighley Oaks 1 (aet, 1-1 90min)

SILSDEN'S derby at home to Keighley Oaks had been eagerly anticipated for weeks, and it didn't disappoint, with the hosts triumphing in extra time after a highly-entertaining clash.

The hosts were without skipper Victoria Ellis and had a stand-in keeper in Kate Perfect, while Mollie McMahon, Jodie Elliott and Melissa Houldsworth were absent for the visitors.

First Division Silsden had pace up front and defended stoutly, although Premier Division Oaks created more chances in what was a terrific contest.

Oaks coach Neil Farley is still wondering how Kirsty Delaney's overhead kick early in the game didn't go in after being tipped onto the underside of the bar.

Becky Granger, Delaney, Rachel Holdsworth all had other first-half opportunities but it was Silsden who took the lead after 14 minutes.

Harrier Brewer's corner was delivered to the near post, where Laura Ackroyd pounced.

Five minutes later, the visitors were level when Granger crossed from the right for winger Kylie Armstrong to score at the far post.

Silsden then had a goal ruled out for offside when Christina Aston put Stacey Wood through.

Oaks also hit the bar and a post but the score remained at 1-1 by half-time.

Chances continued to come for the visitors in the second half but Perfect lived up to her name, Silsden's centre halves Rebecca Brown and Katie Fawcett formed a rock-solid partnership and full backs Charlotte Hutchinson and Dee Rutherford did well in both defence and attack.

Midfielders Wood, Vicky Williamson and Sarah Betterton were also beavering away, while Beth Gaines was outstanding for Oaks, who again hit a post in extra time.

Crucially, Silsden took the lead five minutes into the second period of the additional 30 minutes after good work from Williamson, Ackroyd and Kathryn Bownass, stand-in captain Brewer's superb 25-yard shot sparking wild celebrations.

Silsden's manager Gareth Wilson and assistant manager Matt Oxley said: "We cannot be prouder of every player, and are awarding the player of the match award to the whole team" – a gesture that was repeated by Oaks manager Steve Brett.

Silsden will be at home to Tingley Athletic Reserves in the semi-final on Sunday, March 22, while Tingley Athletic and Harrogate Railway Athletic meet in the other tie on the same date.

Oaks are at home to Brighouse Athletic in the league on Sunday, while Silsden host Leeds Medics & Dentists.
