Havant 21 Wharfedale 23
BEFORE a Bank Holiday crowd at the Bedford Blues ground, Wharfedale Colts came from behind to score a last-minute winner against a star-studded Havant side.
In a match of high quality and high tension, the smaller Wharfedale side matched Havant in every phase of the game, exhibiting enough tactical nous to keep the match tight as it moved into its final stage.
They were held up over the Havant line no fewer than three times, the Greens held a lead of 18-16 with a quarter of the match to go, only for Havant to score an unconverted try for a 21-18 advantage.
Then with the clock moving into injury time Joe Gill outpaced the Hampshire side’s defence to crash over in the corner for the narrowest of victories.
Wharfedale’s other tries came from Adam Stockton and James Otulakowski. Gill added a conversion and two penalties.
The triumph sets up the Wharfedale Colts for a grand finale to their season when next Sunday hey take part in the Cock o’ the North tournament at the Avenue, when as champions of Yorkshire they will play Lancashire champions Lymm. Kick-off is 3:30 pm.
