West Riding County Amateur League Division One: Steeton Reserves 1 Overthorpe SC 3

Steeton went down to Overthorpe for the second week running in the league following last week’s cup defeat.

The hosts thought they had taken the lead after ten minutes when Joe Mason and Harry McGowan combined well on the right before the latter crossed for Andrew Briggs to nod home but the referee ruled out the effort as the ball had gone out of play.

Two minutes later the visitors had a superb opportunity to take the lead but put the ball over the bar from close range before goalkeeper Harry Jarman pulled out a wonderful save.

The visitors had many long-distance efforts, with one hitting the bar.

However, the deadlock was broken on the half-hour mark when, after a scramble in the goalmouth in which Jarman was injured, the ball was stabbed home.

And despite the best efforts of the Steeton defence, the lead was doubled in the 38th minute when a neat interchange of passes led to a firm cross being smartly headed home.

Damian Whiteoak and Briggs both troubled the visiting keeper with long distance efforts but the Chevrons found themselves three behind as Jarman was left with no chance after great play between the Overthorpe attack.

Steeton seemed to pick up from this point and Whiteoak's curling left-foot drive from the edge of the area brought the goal of the game to restore some hope.

The home side piled on the pressure but couldn’t find any further breakthrough, with Jarman pulling off a fine double save from a counter to make sure Overthorpe didn’t run away with the match.
