SETTLE allowed a two-goal lead slip away in the final 20 minutes to crash out of this season's West Riding County Challenge Cup against Leeds Modernians.

Everything seemed to be going well for the Craven League champions and last season's quarter-finalists as they established a 2-0 lead with goals by Mark Loughlin and Luke Hepton.

But Modernians took advantage of a tiring Settle side to snatch victory with three goals late in the game.

Even then, Settle had a chance in the final minute to take the game to penalties but Ben Phillips saw his shot rebound to safety off the crossbar.

Team manager Dave Worthington said: "We were a little naive and kept trying to attack in numbers and were then getting caught on the break.

"We were tired and just couldn't prevent them from taking advantage in the closing stages of the game."

Skipton LMS hit semi-professional Thackley Reserves for six as they cruised into the second round.

LMS piled forward, playing some attractive football and looked like scoring with every attack.

The eventual 6-0 margin of victory would have been greater if their finishing had matched their approach play.

LMS had already squandered a number of chances when the Thackley centre half put the ball in his own net.

The second came from the head of Chris Simpson, who rose highest to convert an Ian Craven free kick. A 3rd goal just before half-time effectively sealed the game. Paul Wilkin whipped in a corner and the ball was powerfully met by Robert Bingham.

The second half was much of the same as LMS struck immediately through Luke Howsen. He headed home after good work from Matthew Simpson.

The fifth goal came from a sweetly struck volley from Will Beckwith and Howsen completed the scoring from a tight angle.

Matthew Simpson, Olly Hurst, Paul Wilkin and Will Freakes – who made two outstanding saves – all performed well.

Grassington United also had a comfortable win. They shot down Robin Hood Athletic 6-1 with Jan Ozdoba (2), Jeremy Gee (2), Tom Bradford and a Paul Wright, penalty, making up their tally.

Two more Craven teams to make it to the second round were Cowling, 4-0 winners over Oulton Athletic, and Rimmington, who defeated Springhead 5-3.
