Silsden u-18s 6 Rossington Main u-18s 3

THE COBBYDALERS progressed into the second qualifying round of this season's FA Youth Cup but their victory wasn't confirmed until they notched the vital fifth, which gave them a two goal cushion.

There was drama from the start when Lawrence Dunne underhit his pass back to right-back Keann Shaw and Liam Cooper broke forwards to net the opener on six minutes.

Silsden were level on three minutes when Steven Smith, in the visitors goal, failed to hold a shot from Ben Cox and Owen Williamson tapped the ball home.

Dunne put the hosts ahead from the spot after he was tripped in the box but a mix-up saw Daniel Marquis level for Rossington.

The Cobbydalers went 3-2 up when Dunne set up Williamson to score eight minutes before the break.

Cooper put the visitors level with two minutes left on the clock but the ding-dong clash saw fortunes change yet again as Silsden's Dan Scott headed home a corner to make it 4-3 at the break.

It became clear that the next goal would be crucial and Andrew Briggs got the vital goal, when he drove home after the ball had deflected off Main's George Kidd.

The energy drained from the visitors and Briggs had the final word when he made it 6-3 on 75 minutes.

Manager Steve Narey was delighted with the win. He said: “We made a few errors but we were fantastic when on the attack. Rossington punished us for our mistakes but the character of the team came through. It could have been an even bigger scoreline had it not been for the Rossington keeper.”

Silsden now entertain Chester City, who have progressed with a walkover against Runcorn Town and two victories against teams from the North West Counties League, beating Chadderton 9-1 and Cheadle 7-1.

SILSDEN: Wasielewski, Shaw, Bridge, Fox, Scott (Allan 72), McGowan (Gilmartin 54), Dunne, Smith, Williamson (Mitchell 82), Cox, Briggs.
