Silsden 2 Guiseley 1

A LATE goal from sub Nicky McNally put the Cobbydalers into the next round of the West Riding County Cup at the expense of Vanarama National League neighbours Guiseley.

His deceptive chip from the left-hand side of the penalty box on 82 minutes, just after he had come on, fooled the otherwise superb Lions keeper Dan Atkinson.

Silsden almost made it three when McNally set up Will Storrie but Atkinson made another dive low to his left to push the ball wide of the far post.

The Cobbydalers held out for the remaining ten minutes to seal a notable victory over a much-changed Lions team featuring academy players but also some first-teamers.

Among their number was Talent Ndlovu, who had scored for the Cobbydalers last Saturday. Ndlovu had a good game, his experience at the Angel Telecom Stadium giving him more confidence.

Tom Craddock curled an early shot wide for the visitors but from then on the Cobbydalers were their equals.

James Nettleton, a former Guiseley skipper, partnered Elliot Firth at the heart of the Silsden defence. Firth, who has acclimatised well to a higher level, out-jumped and outwitted his opponents both in the air and on the ground.

The introduction of Charlie Collinge in midfield has galvanised the Cobbydalers, allowing Joe Mitchell a free role to burst forwards. Indeed it was Mitchell who opened the scoring on seven minutes, chasing down a misdirected header from Josh Snowden and sliding the ball past Atkinson.

Joe Taylor in the home goal had not been troubled until Tafadzwa Mumbanya's dribble down the left brought a corner. The ball reached the far post for Liam Dickinson to head back across the face of the goal to Snowden, who stabbed home three minutes before the break.

Chris Wademan was denied with the second half only three minutes old when Atkinson dived at the striker's feet after Danny Hall had underhit his back-pass.

With 20 minutes left Luke Porritt drove a fierce cross into the Silsden area but there were no takers. At the other end Firth was wide with a speculative over-head kick and then the youngster denied Devonte Morton in his own goal area.

Sub Ben Crabtree's hamstring problem recurred and McNally replaced him with ten minutes left, going on to become the match-winner.

The Cobbydalers now face North West Counties League October team of the month Northwich 1874 at home on Saturday. If they can maintain their progress it should be a thrilling encounter.
