CLARKSON Cup holders Settle A have been knocked out of this season's competition in the qualifying round.

Broughton Road B, who were receiving a 50 point start, edge home 246-240 at Rolls Royce.

Things were looking good for Settle when they pulled back the handicap, but David Russell came up with a crucial 21-5 win to swing the match the Roaders way

It means that Settle A now be playing in the Supplementary Ambulance Cup.

League champions Cononley A are also out on the toss of a coin after their match with Sutton A at Whinfield finished with the scores tied at 246 each.

Cononley A, who had to give 35 shots to their opponents, had seven winners with Rob Scarr 21-8 and David Hoskin 21-9 securing the biggest victories.

Sutton produced three winners in Gary Bowdin 21-12, Scott Bairstow 21-14 and Anthony Emmott 21-18.

Another big game saw Crosshills A take on Keighley A at Lund Park top green, with both sides on a five handicap.

Keighley A had six winners with David Jacques and Neil Hargreaves both recording 21-11 victories, while Andrew Tate 21-12 put up the best score for Crosshills who were beaten 197-168.

Steeton B (110) and Gargrave B (90) had a cracking match at Silsden. Jane Pearce got Gargrave B off to a good start with a 21-4 win which pulled back most of the handicap.

It was nip and tuck all the way with Gargrave B having six winners to Steeton B's four, but victory went to Steeton by 278-277 thanks largely to Alan Jeffrey's 21-12 win.

Crosshills C (130) are the highest handicapped team left in the Clarkson Cup after they defeated Whinfield A at Grassington 296-275.

The other Clarkson Cup Qualifiers where Silsden PF A (50) Silsden P F B (85), Colne C C (20) Sutton B (95), Gargrave A (40) Steeton A (70), Silsden (20) Colne Legion A (50), Cononley B (75) Rolls Royce (70) Devon A (25).

The Supplementary Ambulance Cup will be contested by all the defeated teams plus Gargrave C who lost in the preliminary round.

The one Ambulance Cup preliminary round tie is on Thursday, May 26 when Colne Legion B (70) face Gargrave C (135). Waiting for the winner are Gargrave B (90).

The Yorkshire Merit qualifying round will be held on the same day at 6.45pm. There will be two qualifiers for the final at Hove Edge on Monday, May 30.

The Dick Keighley Cup will be held on Sunday, June 5 at 1.30 pm. Entries are still being taken by Peter Haworth.

The Inter District Veterans play Castleford this Friday start tomorrow. The home tie will be held at Sutton (1.30pm) while the away leg is at Methley.
