Taylor's Timber West Riding County Amateur League Premier Division: Overthorpe 1 Steeton 2

STEETON got their season underway with a victory at newly promoted Overthorpe, only the brilliance of home keeper Lewis Sykes keeping the Dewsbury side in the game.

The visitors handed debuts to new signings Olly Hunter and Tom Sowerbutts, with Reece Fowler, Jonson Butterfield and Josh Metcalfe on the bench.

Steeton started the brighter, with Lee Reilly dragging a shot wide and Lee Thompson going close following good hold-up play from Graham Holmes.

The visitors were looking dangerous on the left, with Hunter and Joe Park linking well, and they combined with Holmes to create the best chance of the half, Park bursting into the box but delivering neither a cross nor a shot with Andy Holden looking for a tap-in.

It wasn't all one-way traffic, however, as Overthorpe looked to get the ball over the top, and they struck the first blow just before half-time.

Steeton struggled to deal with another long ball, and Elliot Brooke fired the ball across keeper Wayne Mahomet into the top corner.

The visitors, who lost Park to injury at the interval, started the second half strongly, Butterfield's early cross being met by Reilly, with Sykes making a great block with his feet.

Steeton were having much more joy on the right, and Holden fired just over from Joe Mason's cross.

The Chevrons then deservedly equalised.

Holden's inswinging corner was met by Reilly, who guided his header past Sykes, and the same player thought he'd put Steeton ahead but his effort was somehow pushed over.

Mason broke from right back and was unlucky to see his effort blocked before Butterfield's cross appeared to be handled in the area.

The visitors were then caught on the break but were thankful to Mahomet's great save.

Sowerbutts again went close and, with only ten minutes to go, Steeton made the breakthrough.

Hunter, who had beaten three men in a burst from his own half to earn a corner, took the flag-kick himself and Thompson headed Steeton's winner.

Boss Roy Mason said: "It was a well-deserved victory. With a few new faces in it took us a while to gel but the second half especially saw us play some great stuff. The new players are settling in well and we have that bit more strength in depth."

Steeton: Mahomet, Mason, Park (Butterfield), Morgan, K Fox, Sowerbutts, Holden, Thompson, Reilly (Fowler), Holmes, Hunter. Unused subs: Clarkson, Metcalfe.
