FOLLOWING the success of the one-mile handicap at last year’s event, the 100 metres sprint has now been reintroduced to the sporting attractions at this year’s Kilnsey Show on Tuesday, August 30.

Having hitherto – for almost a century – been a popular part of the sports, the track events were deleted from the programme a decade ago, but following the success of the reintroduction of the one-mile race, hopefully the sprint – which had traditionally been a magnet for local footballers and rugby players among others – will also once more return to its former glory.

The last winner of the Kilnsey sprint ten years ago was the Skipton footballer and athlete Richard Barrett (Number 1) who just edged out Chris Simpson (a key figure amid Skipton LMS Craven League and Craven Cup footballing conquests).

Meanwhile third place in that last staging of the Kilnsey sprint was former professional boxing star, John Daly, who is now coach at Keighley Amateur Boxing Club.

Hopefully mention of these spirited competitors will inspire some of their younger contemporaries to test their speedy credentials in front of a traditionally appreciative and large crowd.
