EASTBURN Amateur Boxing Club's Josh Holmes is aiming for glory on the national stage after being crowned Yorkshire title winner in the England Boxing Senior Development Championships.

The 21-year-old stormed to the county crown in style with three impressive wins in the 60kg category, including two stoppages.

His performances have filled trainer Naz Jalil with confidence that the Earby boxer can go further in the competition.

Holmes takes on Astley VIP opponent Jason Weir, who is the North-West and Tyne & Wear champion, on Saturday in the national quarter-finals at Havercroft near Wakefield.

And Jalil said: "Josh stopped his first opponent in 62 seconds and then won his next bout in ten seconds of the second round.

"I had to hold him back in his third fight as he needed to get three rounds under his belt for his fitness.

"He is looking awesome and in mint condition. I am confident he can go further now we are in the national stages."

However, the Eastburn coach, who has seen Holmes develop at the South Craven club over the last six years, knows his stable star must maintain his high standards.

Jalil said: "Astley (near Wigan) is a very good club so this is going to be a tough contest."
