Carlisle City 2 Silsden 1

The Cobbydalers suffered a fourth straight defeat to a club new to the Hallmark Security League as James Gill’s men lost more ground in Division One following a narrow loss at Carlisle City’s Gillford Park.

It was a long journey into Cumbria for a midweek league game and a first ever trip to the venue for Silsden. It proved to be not a happy one however as Gill’s side were 2-0 down after just 13 minutes.

A long throw-in in the fifth minute bounced in the Cobbydalers’ area and some slack marking gifted Ryan Errington the space to fire the ball past Callum Jakovlevs from three yards.

Just eight minutes later Errington turned provider as he claimed the assist when the home side doubled their lead. It was a good, deep delivery from him that picked out Danny Balmer who cracked a shot past Jakovlevs from wide of the keeper’s far past.

Silsden settled after enduring a torrid opening spell and they began to have some success creating chances. Will Storrie was proving to be a nuisance to the Carlisle defence and he whipped in some testing crosses.

Ross Wilson is making his way back from injury but Gill placed his faith in the lively forward and it was rewarded. Wilson created a good opening for Lewis Morgan, which was only thwarted by a top class save from home keeper Adam Coward, before halving the deficit.

Just after the half hour Wilson dipped his shoulder and skipped past two defenders before steering the ball past Coward and into the bottom corner.

The Cobbydalers knocked at the door throughout the second half but just couldn’t find an equaliser. They came close in stoppage time when Storrie produced another run and cross but Nicky McNally’s shot was brilliantly saved by Coward.

Silsden spokesman Jim Rosser said, “We did a lot better than Saturday and there were some very positive signs.

“It was a very entertaining game and we played some good stuff – Will (Storrie) had a blinder. He was amazing and the only downside was that that when he made space to shoot himself he was off target.

“We also had Kev Ryan back at in the centre of defence and he makes such a difference to us. Having an experienced player alongside some of the others brings the best out of these young lads in the squad.”
