West Riding County Amateur League Premier Division: Salts 0 Steeton 2

STEETON notched their third away league win to go fifth in the table with this victory over local rivals Salts.

The Chevrons dominated the early stages, Andy Briggs almost putting them in front after only three minutes but his effort cleared the bar.

Superb work down the right by Andy Holden after receiving the ball from Olly Hunter saw him feed an inch-perfect pass to Briggs, who coolly slotted home to make it 1-0 in the 13th minute.

Leading scorer Lee Reilly was unlucky to see an effort go narrowly wide after taking advantage of a sloppy backpass. Salts then had goalkeeper Danny Bailey to thank for two smart saves.

However, a second goal came on the half-hour mark. A fine team effort involving a number of players ended in a foul. The free-kick was swung over by Olly Hunter and was brilliantly headed back across the goal by Steve Pearson for Alistair Morgan to give Steeton a 2-0 advantage.

A minute before the interval, a crunching tackle by Steeton skipper Tim Hird, who along with Tom Sowerbutts ran the midfield, led to him feeding Ben Richardson, whose effort was spectacularly pushed over by Bailey just as the ball was about to enter the top corner.

As the light faded and the temperature dropped significantly, the second half was less entertaining. The only move which almost led to a goal came in the 53rd minute when a cross from Holden beat team-mates and opponents alike, only to clip the bar and rebound to safety.

At the other end keeper Wayne Mahomet had three shots and two crosses to deal with but was never particularly troubled.

Steeton's win saw them leapfrog their opponents, who dropped to sixth.

The Chevrons return to county cup action on Saturday with an away tie against Headingley AFC.
