CONONLEY Sports Juniors and Grassington Juniors will contest the first Allan Cawood Memorial Trophy final at Skipton Town AFC on Tuesday (6.30pm).

The under-16 competition was arranged by the Craven District Football Association along with the Craven Aire & Wharfe Junior League in memory of a great ambassador for Craven football.

Cawood was involved in football for almost 70 years and established a junior league in West Craven in 1948 before becoming a referee in the early 1950s.

He served the Craven FA as secretary on two occasions (1961-1963 and 1977-1994) and was president in its centenary year of 2009, when he also received the Football Association's 50 years long service award.

Cawood produced a booklet entitled Some Sheep Are On The Pitch and also arranged an exhibition to celebrate the 100 years of Craven Football.

He was secretary of the Craven Referees Society and helped re-establish a Junior League in Craven which is now the Craven Aire & Wharfe Junior League.

He was a man with an eye for detail and never sought praise. His aim in football was "I always do my best for people." The final is a fitting tribute to his wonderful service to Craven football.
