JUST under four weeks remains of the brown trout season which closes on rivers from October 1. Certain enclosed waters that do not provide spawning facilities no longer enforce the close season for brownies but check your club rules to be on the safe side.

The River Aire has not produced a really big specimen this year but even so, fish up to 1,800g have been landed on the stretch from Skipton to Gargrave, mainly to the fly fisherman.

The river is currently in ideal angling condition and could yield a record fish in the final few days.

Coarse fish in the shape of grayling and chub have been making up some good catches lately although most fish have been on the small side.

One fish that was certainly no tiddler was the fine pike landed by Farrell Millington from the Skipton AA water at Snaygill.

The fish weighed 7.27kg and was a personal best for the young angler.

Embsay Reservoir has been fishing very well of late with good catches of the many varieties of trout in the water and also some decent perch.

For plenty of detail about where to fish at Embsay and what methods of bait and lures to use, visit the Skipton AA’s Facebook Groups page.

Whinnygill Reservoir continues to fish very well and anglers have reported some good bags of fish including big roach, bream and orfe from most sides of the water.

Perch and trout are also turning up but the tench and carp have become harder to locate.

Whinnygill will be the venue for this Sunday’s final match of the four match Peter Hart Memorial Series and competitors will no doubt be hoping that the good sport continues.

The draw will be held at 8am with fishing from 9am until noon and entry is for members only.

On the following Sunday, the Craven Winter League will be commencing its eight-match series with the opening match on the Swine Lane length of the canal at Riddlesden.

Registration takes place at the first two matches only at a cost of £7 and match fees are £8 per match.

The draw is at 8am and the matches are of three hours duration.
