ROBBIE Ellis was crowned this year's Peter Lee Trophy champion at Devon Bowling Club.

The annual competition, between members from Devon and Broughton Road, saw a good entry for this season's competition.

The weather was on the bowlers' side for a change, which encouraged some good form.

Top quality bowling throughout the first round saw tight matches aplenty. Results were: Peter Clark 21-19 Arnie Ripley, Robbie Ellis 21-19 Peter Haworth, Jim Akrigg 21-20 Michael Claxton, Brian Gore 21-19 Darrell Gore, Richard Perry 21-19 Brad Nicholson.

The quarter-final matches saw Kevin Burnett get the better of Clark 21-19, while Ellis prove too strong for David Garnett, winning 21-14.

Brian Gore got off to a good start and got the better of team-mate Akrigg 21-17, while the last quarter-final tie saw Dan Moore leading 17-12, only to see Perry come back to triumph 21-17.

Ellis started well in his semi-final with Burnett to lead 10-3 but his opponent recovered to go 19-18 in front, only for Ellis to bounce back and take the match 21-19.

Brian Gore was doing very well against Devon skipper Perry, only to let the game slip away with a bout of poor ends and he could not recover as Perry moved into the final with a 21-15 success.

The day was completed with a very good final. Perry continued his good form to take a big lead 14-6 but club mate Ellis showed why he is such a good bowler with some excellent bowling on tricky marks.

Perry did well restricting Ellis to singles but he was clawing his way back and levelled the match 17-17.

The last few ends saw some very good bowls from both players. And it was Ellis who came out as the Peter Lee champion with a 21-19 victory.

Wendy Lee was on hand to present the trophy and prizes.
