The top two in the First Division of the Mewies Solicitors Craven and District Cricket League both won and extended their lead at the top of the table.
Leaders Cullingworth made the short journey to Sandy Lane and gave them a pounding. Going first, the Royd Terrace side made 165-7 with Steve Welch leading the way with 42no as Fiaz Akram claimed 5-68. The homesters’ reply was undone by a fine piece of bowling by the evergreen David Robinson, who took 7-16 as they were hustled out for just 46.
Thornton were the visitors to Haworth Road and going first found themselves 64-5. Then skipper Jason Lockley (54) and youngster Jack Laycock (46) rallied the side and the innings closed on 167. Nick Griggs had 4-32 and Andrew Gudgeon 4-51. The Baildon Bottom side cantered to the points with 169-4, with M Khan making 60no and Charlie Hainsworth 54.
Third-placed Oakworth slipped up at home to fellow hill toppers Haworth. On a soft wicket the Cure Hill side were dismissed for a modest 75, with the Rowell brothers doing all the damage. Jamie finished with 7-43 and Damian 3-39.
It was also a struggle for the Bronte side who took 33.5 overs to get to the winning post. At one point they were 59-7 before Damian Rowell with 28no saw them home.
There was a high-scoring game at Glusburn where visitors Bradley notched up 224-7 with Craig Tempest battling his way to 73 and skipper James Heseltine making 41no as Sean Williamson took 3-44. The Park Field side opened with 107 for the first wicket where Matt Lloyd went for 43. Partner Liam Roberts went on to make 69. It was left to the Williamson brothers, Sean and Nick, with 56no and 36 respectively to take the side to the spoils.
Cononley’s visit to Crossflatts proved to be fruitless as they went down by 60 runs. The homesters plundered 212-6 with Ryan Brooksbank making 54 and J Brooksbank 50. The South Craveners were never in the hunt as they closed on 152 with only Tom Stead offering much resistance as he made 49no.
There was no play between Cowling and Embsay. The square resembled a paddy field after the rain during the morning.
Bingley Congs, leaders of the Second Division, managed 144 in their 45 overs at home to Barrowford, with opener Andrew Copping top-scoring with 31 as Chris Platt took 6-67 off 20 overs. The Bull Holme side replied with 104 with Platt, batting at No 10, making 21no as Aidy Dibb claimed 3-28 and Chris Hemsley 3-36.
Second-placed Long Lee were thwarted by the weather at Ingrow St John’s and drop down to fourth.
They are overtaken by Chatburn, who recovered from 33-7 to reach 135 at home to Ingrow. John Lockley led the tail wagging with 35 as Dale Hoyle claimed 5-24 and Chris White 3-28. The Keighley side were all at sea when they replied and were brushed aside for just 58. Only skipper David Brown (12), reached double figures. Andy Booth (5-19) and Lockley (5-32) bowled through to take the points.
Pendle Forest missed out on the opportunity to join Chatburn when they went down by 59 runs at Sutton. The home side went first and posted 173 with B Simons with 39 leading the way. Nigel Jones was the main wicket taker with 5-14 off 6.2 overs. The Fence side were knocked back early doors and never recovered with Justin Holdsworth taking 6-26 and Steve Doane 4-30.
Glusburn’s Alan Coney hit 65 of his side’s 143 over at Foulridge. Nigel Hill (5-26) and Chris Booker-Carey (3-56) doing most of the damage.
The Noyna side reached their target in the 30th over for the loss of four wickets, Brooker-Carey making 51no.
Wilsden rattled up 202-7 in their overs at home to Skipton CI, with T Peirson making 73 and Ben Peirson 43. CI could only manage 124 in reply with Dave Collins taking 6-32 in 12 overs.
The joint leaders of the Third Division, Haworth WE and Riddlesden, both won in convincing fashion. The Bronte side down at Airedale where the home team amassed 202-9 with Matthew Cox, returning after surgery rebuilding his cruciate ligament, making 56, Nadeem Zaman 46no and Paul Feather 42. Tinashe Gomwe was the best bowler taking 4-35. The Bronte side roared to victory by seven wickets in the 40th over, Gomwe making 63no, Joe Bottomley 58 and Andy Parker 36.
Adam Khan (48) and Dave Robinson (42) helped Riddlesden to a formidable 209-8 at home to fourth-placed Oakworth II. The Cure Hill side were hustled out for 97 in reply.
Embsay are fifth after seeing off Cowling IIs at Shires Lane. The visitors made 82 with Ben Davy top scoring with 25 as Simon Holt finished with 6-30 and Haroon Ali 3-26. The homesters lost five wickets reaching their target.
Veteran Joe Gordon made 62 as Long Lee beat Ingrow St John’s IIs at Golden View and Denholme thumped Barrowford IIs at Bull Holme by 140 runs with 15-year-old Andy Wear taking 6-41 in nine overs.
Haworth Road encountered few problems on their travels to Gargrave winning emphatically.
Chatburn IIs had a surprise in stall for leaders of the Fourth Division, Ingrow, when they visited. Solid batting led by Ben Threllfall (36) and John Moore (35) helped the Ribble Valley side to 197-7. Then Threllfall (6-59) and Geoff Lambert (4-37) had the Hainworth side back in the hut for 100.
Second-placed Cononley owe a big thank you to Willie Naylor as they go to the top of the pile. Down at Crossflatts he rescued his side from 59-7 with a fine 101no which saw them to the spoils by one wicket in the 41st over. Crossflatts had made 159-6 in their innings with G Emsley scoring 35 and J Bairstow 32.
Eldwick & Gilstead also leapfrog Ingrow as they beat Pendle Forest IIs by 35 runs at Fence.
Bradley’s Chris Brookes took 8-36 off 11.3 overs to set up a 101 run victory over Wilsden IIs. For Bradley 13-year-old Jack Beetham recorded his maiden senior half-century as he scored 51 to go with Michael Clarkson’s 43 which saw them to 189-8.
Cullingworth IIs chased down Sandy Lane IIs 161 and won by two wickets with Martin Rendell 77 runs and 3-35 being their star performer.
There was no play at Haworth IIs where Airedale IIs were the visitors.
Fifth Division leaders, Riddlesden II also tasted defeat. They lost by five wickets at Skipton CI. Richard Bennett (56) was the mainstay of the Keighley side’s 157-8 as R Suter took 5-50. M Hodgson (65) and seasoned campaigner Mel Mason (37) helped the Skipton side reach their target in the 37th over.
That defeat allows Oakworth IIIs to draw level with Riddlesden IIs as they beat Glusburn IIIs at Carleton. Going first the Cure Hill side hit 181-9 in their innings with L Wrathall making 39 and B Howell 33no. Then Jack Davison took 6-43 to undermine the homesters.
Denholme IIs lost by 114 runs at home to Little Marsden, and Gargrave beat Eldwick & Gilstead IIs by six wickets with Ed Stanley making 51no.
There was no play between Bradford & Bingley IIIs and Bingley Congs IIs or Thornton IIs v Sutton IIs.
Finally Foulridge have pulled their second XI from the league which left Haworth WE IIs without a game.
It was a bitterly cold north-east wind that blew on Sunday and that probably kept away the promised rain when the second round of the Cowling Cup was played.
Thornton IIs travelled to Eldwick & Gilstead and on losing the toss were asked to bat first and 45 overs later they were 322-4. They got off to a flyer with Tom Day and Mark Procter putting on 138 for the first wicket, with the latter going for 62. Day went on to finish with 88 as the score mounted. At 30 overs they were 170 and the old adage is to double the score in the next 15. They very nearly did that thanks to a superb innings from 16-year-old Will Proctor, who hit 10 sixes and 4 fours in an innings of 99no. He had two balls to get his century but unfortunately he was unable to get a bat on ball. Mick Foster chipped in with 48 and unselfishly ran himself out to allow Proctor those last two balls.
The home side set off at a great rate of knots but, unlike their visitors, lost wickets regularly. Skipper Arnold Rastrick batted well and finished with 66 as Proctor took 4-40 off nine overs to round of a good game for him.
Ingrow St John’s IIs were restricted to 90-9 up at Street Lane with M Tariq top scoring with 34 as P Carey took 4-52 and Darren Greenwood 5-28. The red rose side lost six wickets reaching their target.
Richard Bennett made 76 as Riddlesden IIs were dismissed for 130 at home to Oakworth IIs. Youngster Jack Davison took 4-18 off 11 overs. The Cure Hill side knocked off the runs for the loss of three wickets with Michael Scarborough, returning after a lengthy back problem, hitting 88.
Cullingworth IIs dropped down the hill to Crossflatts IIs and notched up 197 with Ryan Clark making 42no, George Fletcher 39 and A Partington 30. The home side knocked off the runs for the loss of three wickets with Brian Freemanis leading the way with 74no.
Cowling IIs got back to winning ways at the expense of visitors Denholme IIs, who batted first and made 144 with N Armitage carry his bat for 61no as A Shafait took 3-19. The home side cantered to victory by seven wickets with evergreen Richard Cleaver scoring 50, Ben Davy 37no and Steve Dalby 29.
Willie Naylor scored his second century of the weekend, 125 as Cononley IIs amassed 212 in their innings. However, it just wasn’t enough as Embsay IIs got home by three wickets in the last over.
The derby between Barrowford IIs and Pendle Forest IIs at Bullholme Oval went the way of the visitors, who batted first and recorded 193-7 with Mo Furquan hitting 73no and Matt Lutz 43.
The game was almost over as a contest when No 10 J Nutter (39) and No 11 D Stafford (15no) put together a last wicket partnership which took the score to 124.
Wilsden IIs progressed into the third round when Haworth IIs were unable to raise a side.
