Wharfedale RUFC have honoured their former player and first-team coach and manager Peter Hartley by presenting a cup in his memory The Peter Hartley Memorial Cup will be awarded every season to the mini and junior squad that has the best percentage of wins within that season.

Chairman of the Mini and Juniors section Phil Birch said: “Peter was a huge influence, not only at senior level here at Wharfedale, but also with the mini and juniors.

“He coached the likes of Andy ‘Hodge’ and Ian Peel from U-7s to Colts and we wanted something to remember Peter by for many years to come and this memorial cup will do just that.”

“Each season the entire mini and junior section, all 12 squads from U-7s to Colts, will compete for the cup and it will be awarded to the squad with the most percentage wins throughout the season and hopefully this will add a further competitive edge to every rugby match played.”

The first winners of this cup were the U-13s with a superb 85 per cent win rate closely followed by the U-15s. It was only the very last match of the season that saw them secure the award.

A presentation was made to the U-13s captain William Coates by Peter’s daughter Victoria.
