Medal full house for Skipton Karate Club


The 14 Skipton Karate Centre members who travelled to Aireborough Leisure Centre in Guiseley for an inter-club junior grade tournament all came back with at least one medal.

It was a very successful day. In fact, Skipton notched a clean sweep in the boys’ kata, and a girl, who is only 3ft 10in, gained a silver medal on her competitive debut.

Instructors Ian and Rebecca Spence said: “For many of the students, it was their first tournament, so they did exceptionally well. As always, we are incredibly proud of them.”

Results were – Kata: Varshika Selverajah, second girls’ red to orange belt ten years and under; Kaitlin Wilkinson, third girls’ red to orange belt ten years and under; Grace Canny, first girls’ green to purple belts ten years and under; Emily Howarth, second girls’ green to purple belts ten years and under; Lucy Howarth, first mixed green to purple belts 11 years and over; Edson Richmond, first boys’ red to orange belt nine years and under; Joseph Pate, second boys’ red to orange belt nine years and under; Nheyavan Selverajah, third boys’ red to orange belt nine years and under; Matthew Ellwood-Smith, second boys’ red to orange belt ten years plus; Samantha Thornton, third ladies’ green to purple belt; Chris Lunn, second men’s green to purple belt. Kumite (fighting): Amy Lodge, second girls’ red to orange belt under 4ft; Emily Howarth, first girls’ red to orange belt under 4ft 10in; Lucy Howarth, first girls’ green to purple belt 4ft 10in plus; Matthew Maufe, third boys’ green to purple 4ft 10in plus; Samantha Thornton, third ladies’ green to purple belt; Chris Lunn, first men’s green to purple belt; Jacek Kobylecki, second men’s green to purple belt.

* Seidokan Karate Club, based in Keighley and Silsden, won six medals at the North East Open Karate Championships in Sunderland.

There were first prizes for Ellie Greenhalgh (mixed 12 and 13-year-old fighting), Fern Sugden (girls’ 14 and 15-year-old fighting) and Greg Gentleman (male 16 to 19-year-old fighting).

Meanwhile, Danyaal Ali, Hasnen Mahmood, Danyaal Mahmood and Haider Ali won bronzes in the 12 years and under team fighting.

Jack Greenhalgh was third in the boys’ 14 and 15-year-old fighting, while debutant Penny Shaw, only 16, was third in the ladies’ kata.

The club followed this up with six medal-winners at the Karate England Board National Karate Championships in Sheffield.

They were: Hasnen Mahmood, second ten years and under boys’ fighting; Ellie Greenhalgh, third 11-12 years girls’ fighting; Fern Sugden, third under-18 years girls’ fighting; Greg Gentleman, third under-18 years boys’ fighting; and Samantha Hadfield-Abosch, third ladies’ veteran fighting; second open ladies ippon.
