Settle are unsettled by the pace of Anwar

Settle first team fell to some top-class swing bowling by Pakistan international Anwar Ali in their match at league leaders Clitheroe on Saturday.

The hosts batted first and posted 189 for eight in the face of spirited bowling and fielding.

Pro Harry Boam took one wicket for 35 in two economical spells, but it was the relentless spin of Dickon Morris which kept Settle on the offensive.

His excellent return of 6-61 was just reward for 16 overs of guile and length.

Morris also contributed a run-out and Andrew Davidson took two well-judged catches.

Settle were soon 12-2 in reply as the Karachi paceman struck, but Boam and Morris put together a fine 60-run partnership to give hope to the visitors.

After they departed for 46 and 23 respectively, the cause was boosted by 19 from Andrew Booth but Ali’s second spell simply blew Settle away.

His 85mpb bowling saw him finishd with six wickets without assistance from the field leaving the Marshfield team on 136 all out.

This weekend’s double-header against Earby at home and Edenfield away might be less demanding if current league ranking is a guide Earby suffered a 69-run defeat at Cherry Tree. Paul Turner’s 94 helped Cherry Tree to a score of 168-6, then Joe Bolton (3-14) and Andreas Sudnik (3-32) dismissed Earby for 99. Earby will be hoping to do better at Settle on Saturday and at home to Baxenden on Sunday.

Barnoldswick secured a six-wicket win in a match reduced to 35 overs against Oswaldtwistle Imanuel.

Oswaldtwistle were restricted to 132-6 and Barnoldswick eased to victory with Liam Bedford making 54 and skipper Richard Nichols (24no).

Barnoldswick will be at home to Salesbury on Saturday and then play at Great Harwood on Sunday.

Settle’s second string had a good first half against Feniscowles as they restricted the visitors to 134-7, Joel Dalby taking 6-48 in a superb spell of 22 overs.

However, their batting was disastrous as they collapsed to 26 all out.

They will look to regroup against lower-ranked Earby and Burnley GSOB this weekend.

There was a positive result for Settle thirds as they dismissed Clitheroe for 81, with Nick Cokell (5-28), Laurence Read (3-19) and Will Metcalfe (2-14) taking the wickets.

Robbie Davidson’ attacking unbeaten half-century saw Settle through to a seven-wicket victory.
