Bolton Abbey's veteran cricketers delighted to play on the world stage

The seasoned campaigners from Bolton Abbey have been enjoying playing on the world stage.

They hosted three Australian side’s during the 14th Air New Zealand World Golden Oldies Tournament and emerged with two wins.

Now the club members are discussing the possibility of entering the next tournament in Adelaide, Australia in 2012.

Club scorer John Heap said: “It has been a wonderful event and everybody has enjoyed themselves immensely.

“New friendships have been formed. Our visitors loved the scenery at Bolton Abbey and adored the meals provide by Elsie and Roger Tiffany.

In their first match Botlon Abbey beat Kukaburra by four wickets after chasing down a score of 138-9. Paul Smith made 35.

Next came a five-wicket win over Australia/Sri Lanka Silver who included a Japanese cricketer, Kenny Matsumura, who even delighted the spectators by taking a stunning catch on the boundary.

Heap said: “It was a great effort and everybody was thrilled for Kenny. He was such an engaging character.”

Ian Parkinson (38), Tony Boreham (38) and Peter Loweth (35) saw Bolton Abbey to victory as they replied to a score of 188-6 which included 40 from Buck Rogers.

The final match against Springwood Royals on Friday was rained off after the visitors had made 108. Greg Lewis hit 44 for the Australians.
