Skipton sparkle as they win inter-district crown

Skipton produced a stunning performance to win the 2012 Ladies Inter District Champ- ionship at Harrogate.

The Skipton side was drawn at Wayside with two tough matches against Bradford and last year’s winners Huddersfield.

The first was against Bradford and a good performance produced six winners and an 18-point victory.

The next game with Huddersfield was the big one. Although it ended five winners apiece, it was Skipton who won the match by eight points and progressed to the semi-final.

The team moved onto the Black Swan green, which is notoriously difficult, where their opponents were Leeds District.

The green was not too bad and Skipton picked up pace and proved to be far to strong for Leeds, with seven winners securing a 50-point victory.

Wetherby was the final venue where the opponents were the host district Harrogate.

Green knowledge was in their favour, but they needed a lot more help than that.

Skipton were not going to be denied after many good efforts in previous years they were determined that this chance to win the event would not slip away.

Each side had two winners in the first four but the margins of the victories for Kath Whitaker 21-6 and Cath Rushton 21-10, gave Skipton a slight advantage.

From then on it was all Skipton with six winners led by Joanne Ellis 21-4, Muriel Baker 21-13 and Pauline Lightowler 21-13 .

The final score was Skipton 185 Harrogate 138. Yorkshire Crown Green president Joan Wrigley presented the trophy to Skipton.
