Armthorpe Welfare 1 Barnoldswick Town 4
Town overcame the sending off of Lewis Jordan to score three times after being reduced to ten men to clinch a comfortable West Riding County Cup first round win on Tuesday night.
Jordan was dismissed after collecting his second yellow card in the 55th minute for hand ball as he tried to apply the finishing touch to a ball in the penalty area.
Town were leading 1-0 at the time through a Jordan goal from a free kick just before the break.
Armthorpe sensed their chance and pressed for an equaliser which came seven minutes later when Craig Aspinall sent a looping header into the far corner of Marko Marosi’s net.
Marosi was forced to make a good save from Richard Smith’s header, while at the other end Bill Williams picked up a free kick just inside the penalty area and beat three defenders before shooting inches wide of William Biggs’ left hand post.
Town regained the lead after 75 minutes. Danny Morton sent in a perfect cross for debut-making Kieron Lee to score with a first-time shot.
With ten minutes left Town sent on Mark Threlfall for Aaron Hollindrake who had missed the last three matches through suspension.
A minute later a great ball from substitute Liam Blades to Threlfall saw him square the ball across the penalty area into the path of Lee, who smashed home his second goal from just inside the box.
Threlfall added the fourth goal with a minute left. His shot at goal was deflected by a defender causing it to loop up over Biggs in goal.
In the end this was a pleasing result with Lee impressing on his debut. With players due back on Saturday from injury perhaps things will finally turn for the team.
