Silsden 0, Colne 1

SILSDEN were unable to repeat their North West Counties League victory over Colne as their Lancashire neighbours gained revenge to progress to the third round of the Men United Cup.

Colne, who had dominated the earlier fixture at the Angel Telecom Stadium when the Cobbydalers defended stoutly to win 1-0, included star striker Danny Boyle, who had notched consecutive hat-tricks against Barnoldswick and AFC Liverpool.

The hosts had Joe Mitchell back from injury and Chris Wademan made his first start of the campaign. James Nettleton came into the back four, allowing Kevin Ryan to move into midfield.

Boyle's first threat came after ten minutes when he timed his run to perfection to latch on to a through ball but Danny Thorpe blocked his effort. Silsden counter-attacked as Craig Nicholls drove in a fierce cross which former Cobbydalers keeper Chris Thompson deflected wide.

Silsden's best chance came as a result of another great run and cross from Nicholls but Zack Dale could not get enough on his shot.

The defining moment of the half came with only five minutes left on the clock. And just as they had been against Nelson, Silsden were responsible for their own undoing.

Dale, near the halfway line, underhit his pass back to Ben Crabtree. The full back, under pressure, tried to steer the ball to Thorpe but Boyle stole it. Thorpe rushed out of his area to try to block Boyle's path to goal and there was a collision outside the box.

Thorpe escaped with a yellow card but Jake Barker-Daish smashed the free-kick home. It was hit with such ferocity that, after it had hit the stanchion of the goal, it ricocheted out of the penalty area.

Silsden were given a let-off in the final minute of the half as Colne were awarded a penalty for Danny Fagan's trip on Anderson but Boyle's spot-kick rebounded off the post.

In the opening minute of the second half, the irrepressible Nicholls saw his shot zip across goal after another darting run. But Colne went closer when Thorpe tipped substitute Andrew Tinkner's shot on to the bar.

Silsden searched in vain for an equaliser as Dale shot over after beating three men and a wicked bounce thwarted Nicholls from controlling a shot when well placed.

Boss Andy Geary said: "I couldn't complain at anything really. We did give the ball away for the goal but we still have a very young set-up, with players learning all the time.

"It's almost like 15 years ago when we were building a team which was to put us in our present position in the football pyramid."
