Steeton Reserves 4 Overthorpe SC 6

Steeton Reserves bowed out of the Division One Cup at the first hurdle in an entertaining ten-goal encounter at Summerhill Lane.

With both sides having received byes in the first round, a place in the semi-finals is the reward for Overthorpe.

The Chevrons fell behind after just two minutes. A one-two on the edge of the box was not dealt with and a low cross was converted by Jack Allerton.

The visitors doubled their lead soon afterwards when Chris Wheater cleared a back pass from Josh Ferguson straight to Overthorpe’s James Wilson, who lobbed the Steeton keeper from 25 yards.

Steeton responded with a goal five minutes later, when Ben Sutcliffe did well to control a long pass and fed Greig Hudson, whose powerful shot left the keeper with no chance.

In the 27th minute Steeton drew level in unusual circumstances. A Mark Hardman cross looked to have been a wasted effort, with no Steeton players challenging for the ball, but it was turned in for an own goal by Overthorpe defender Steve Jordan.

However, the hosts regained the lead when Allerton got his second with a header. Steeton almost hit back immediately when Ferguson hit the post but Allerton should have completed his hat-trick when he struck wide when one on one.

Steeton’s sloppy defending cost them when Overthorpe’s Ashley Hill was left unmarked at a corner and headed home to put his side 4-2 ahead at half-time.

Steeton started the second half better but only an excellent save by Wheater prevented the hosts falling further behind. A double substitution from Overthorpe paid off when sub Reece Patterson smashed home the visitors' fifth.

It was 6-2 when a miscued header fell to Sam Sweeney, who calmly lobbed Wheater. To their credit, Steeton did not give up and their persistence paid off in the 77th minute, when Hudson’s shot was deflected skywards and Ben Sutcliffe headed the ball home as it fell.

They further narrowed the margin with five minutes to go when Josh Metcalfe’s cross was converted by Ferguson.

Steeton piled the pressure on as claims for a penalty were dismissed and Ferguson again went close with a great curling effort.
