SALES of Silsden Football Club's 1914-style newspaper, which was produced to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the start of World War One, has raised more than £500.

The club's commercial manager Barry Thomas and sports club chairman John Lohan presented the Silsden and District Branch of the British Legion with a cheque for £513.

And further collections on a special memorial day, held when the Cobbydalers hosted 1874 Northwich in the North West Counties League last month, raised the grand total to £758.

Barry said the Silsden Herald newspaper, which included articles on Silsden players who had won a football competition while on the Western Front, had been well received.

He said: “It has been so successful that copies have been sent around the world to Cobbydalers who have emigrated or who are working abroad.

"It took a lot of effort over a period of two months and a few sleepless nights but we were delighted both with the paper and the support which we have received from the Silsden public."

He added that the club might arrange another memorial for Armistice Day 2018.

The club thanked all volunteers who made the memorial day so special.

Jeremy Billett, one of three representatives of the British Legion Silsden branch, said the community had all pulled together and that the total sum raised this year - £4,347 - had surpassed last year's by almost £1,000.
