Keighley FA Challenge Cup final: Oxenhope 4 Steeton 0

Oxenhope claimed their second piece of silverware in a week as they retained the Keighley Cup in front of a big crowd at Silsden.

Having lifted the West Riding County FA Challenge Cup seven days earlier, Rec put their name on the district's premier trophy for the third time in four years.

Steeton started the stronger but, on the quarter-hour, a long ball out of defence was run on to by Michael Garnett, who cut through the centre of the Chevrons back line and drove the ball over goalkeeper Josh Brooksbank for the opener.

Steeton regrouped and applied the pressure with some robust challenges and reduced Oxenhope to breakaways down field. The holders’ defence was never really breached though, with Scott Nelson, Liam McNicol, Ollie Metcalfe and Jason Walton in commanding form.

Minutes before the break Oxenhope doubled their advantage, Garnett latching onto a through ball from the hard-working Josh Kaine in midfield. The big striker muscled his way past two Steeton defenders before hammering home.

After the break the holders got into their stride. Craig Morris twisted and turned past his marker out on the right and crossed to Garnett, whose shot was blocked before Tom Marshall’s follow-up went over.

Marshall then sped down the left and crossed to Moriarty but he blazed over. An injury to influential defender Metcalfe forced Oxenhope into a re-organisation of their defence but sub Chris Day slotted in seamlessly.

On 70 minutes Marshall’s trickery took him past his marker and he rounded Brooksbank. However, just as he was about to pull the trigger with the goal at his mercy the keeper grabbed his ankle. Brooksbank was shown a straight red and Day stepped up to confidently put away the resulting penalty past stand-in keeper Sam Rooke.

Minutes later Will Wells won the ball in his own half and passed to Leon Smith, whose pace took him beyond the Steeton back line. He cut the ball back to man of the match Garnett, who unselfishly rolled the ball into the path of Moriarty. He took a touch before driving the ball across the goal and into the far corner.

With the reserve team's Keighley Supplementary Cup success and the third team’s victory in the Craven League Division Two Cup final, this season is turning out to be one of Oxenhope's best in their history.

The Worth Valley side return to league action on Saturday at Wetherby (2.30pm).
